A blackout has fallen over presidential television coverage.
For the first time in recent memory, not one major network camera will document President Trump’s public schedule, including his appearance at the United Nations.
Behind the silence sits a decision by Trump to strip White House credentials from three news organizations, a move he tied directly to their coverage of him.
He unveiled the ban on Friday in a written statement naming each outlet.
“I am proud to announce that, effective immediately, I am banning Fake News CNN, MSNOW (who recently changed their name from MSNBC due to lack of viewership and credibility!), and Politico (The recipients of an illegal and ridiculous $8 Million Dollar subscription, an All Time Record, directly from the United States Government, under Crooked Joe Biden, in order to keep them ‘alive.’ Seems like corruption to me!), from the White House as a result of their constant ‘reporting’ FAKE NEWS!” Trump wrote.
Credentials for reporters at all three outlets were pulled with no advance notice, the organizations say.
CNN’s turn to run the rotating television pool fell on Monday, September 21, placing the network directly in the path of the new restriction according to Variety.
Fox News Washington bureau chief Bryan Boughton, who currently chairs the pool, sent word to fellow networks that coverage would stop entirely rather than shift to another outlet.
“This is to advise that, effective today, the TV pool will not be covering events designated as pool coverage of the President,” Boughton’s email stated. “This follows the White House’s position preventing CNN from fulfilling its assigned pool duties. There will be no replacement pool put in place.”
No substitute network stepped in to fill CNN’s slot.
Five organizations make up the television pool rotation: ABC News, CBS News, CNN, Fox News Media, and NBC News.
All five put their names to a joint statement issued Monday, standing behind the excluded outlets despite their own competitive rivalries.
“The public has a vital interest in receiving accurate, independent information about its government,” the pool members wrote. “No administration should restrict a news organization because it objects to its reporting.”
Beyond the pool suspension, the three banned outlets are pursuing a legal remedy.
CNN, MS NOW, and Politico confirmed Monday that a lawsuit against the administration is now in motion.
Their joint statement cast the litigation as a defense of constitutional press protections.
“To protect their First Amendment rights and defend the principle that the government does not decide what the press reports or publishes,” the outlets said of their reasoning for suing.
They also laid out how the credential removals unfolded, describing a process that gave them no chance to respond beforehand.
“Without notice or process, the White House revoked our journalist’s credentials because it objected to our reporting,” the statement read. “Left unchallenged, this threatens press freedom and the public’s right to independent journalism free from government interference.”
Trump’s Friday post also took aim at Politico’s financial relationship with the prior administration, referencing a subscription arrangement he characterized as improper.
The figure he cited, $8 million, was described in his statement as a record sum paid to keep the outlet operating.
No coverage void has yet been addressed by either the White House or the five-network pool as of Monday.
The dispute has pulled Fox News, a network broadly seen as favorable to Trump, into open alignment with outlets he has repeatedly criticized.
That alignment centers not on editorial content but on access itself, with all five pool members framing the issue as one of principle rather than politics.
Whether the credentials will be restored, and under what conditions, remains an open question tied to the pending litigation.
The scheduled UN appearance proceeded Monday without pool television footage, marking the first tangible consequence of the standoff.
Further fallout, including the trajectory of the CNN, MS NOW, and Politico lawsuit, is expected to develop in the coming days.
