Trump Says Americans Who Oppose Data Centers ‘Want to End up Being Backwards and Poor’

A political firestorm over artificial intelligence infrastructure intensified this week after President Donald Trump accused domestic critics of playing into the hands of a foreign adversary, framing the rejection of data centers as an economic death sentence for American towns.

Communities weighing whether to welcome the massive computing facilities now find themselves at the center of a national argument that stretches from state capitols to social media disinformation networks.

Trump chose Truth Social as his platform to deliver an unusually blunt warning to local governments considering blocking the projects.

“The only reason that communities throughout the U.S.A. should not want Data Centers is if they want to end up being backwards and poor,” Trump wrote.

His message framed the decision as binary, offering prosperity to towns that embrace the facilities while predicting decline for those that turn them away.

“If they want to be successful and rich, with far lower taxes and jobs all over the place, let Data Reign,” Trump wrote.

The president cast rejection as a self-inflicted wound, noting that other regions stand ready to claim the investment dollars and jobs that skeptical communities might forfeit.

“The good news is that there are plenty of other places that want them. If we kill the Golden Goose, you will only have yourselves to blame,” Trump wrote.

He then escalated the stakes considerably, tying the domestic backlash to geopolitical rivalry and suggesting Beijing views the opposition movement as a gift.

“China could not be happier with this anti Data Center movement. Actually, they can’t believe it is happening!” Trump wrote.

Trump’s broadside landed just after X released findings from an internal investigation into coordinated inauthentic activity targeting AI and energy policy discussions.

The platform’s probe uncovered a sprawling network of suspicious accounts, many exhibiting behavior consistent with automated bot activity tied to foreign influence operations.

X reported that its team “identified a bot farm of approximately 200,000 accounts.

Within this farm, we found 200 accounts posting in a manner that could manipulate a legitimate debate about American AI and energy policy.”

Notably, the grassroots resistance to data centers has not broken cleanly along party lines, drawing skepticism from conservative and progressive voices alike, a dynamic that has complicated Trump’s political calculus.

Investigators at X zeroed in on specific narratives being pushed by the suspect accounts, including claims tying the facilities to rising utility bills.

The report cited posts alleging that “AI data centers are driving up household electricity prices and straining the grid,” language that closely tracks arguments now common among American critics.

Beyond text-based posts, the bot network reportedly deployed visual propaganda, including cartoon content mocking the industry’s financial beneficiaries.

X’s findings referenced “AI-generated cartoons that depicted data-center operators enriching themselves at the public’s expense” as part of the broader campaign.

The controversy has already produced friction between Trump and fellow Republicans, most notably after Texas Governor Greg Abbott moved to freeze approvals for new data center projects statewide.

Pressed on Abbott’s decision during a sit-down with Punchbowl News, Trump made clear he viewed the pause as counterproductive.

“I saw Texas the other day sort of is against data centers,” Trump said. “I think it’s a mistake. And I’m not taking positions, I just think it’s a mistake, because there are other communities that want it. When a community wants it, it means a lot of money is going to come into that community.”

Weeks earlier, Trump had already previewed his stance while fielding questions from reporters, emphasizing the financial upside for host communities.

“If you pick the right location, what it means for a community is jobs and lots of money and lower taxes,” Trump told reporters.

He also moved to preempt one of the most persistent objections to the industry, insisting new facilities would not burden existing electrical grids.

“The data centers now are mandated by me that they build their own electricity, so they’re not taking it from the grid,” Trump said.

That grid-related mandate directly addresses the electricity-price argument flagged in the X disinformation report, suggesting the administration is aware of which talking points have gained the most traction publicly.

As billions in AI infrastructure spending hang in the balance, the standoff between Washington, statehouses, and local communities appears poised to intensify rather than fade.

Whether Trump’s warnings shift public sentiment or simply deepen the divide, the data center debate has firmly cemented itself as a defining flashpoint in the broader fight over America’s AI future.
