FBI Arrests Arkansas Man Accused of Walmart Mass Shooting Threat in Gaming Chat Over Hantavirus Scenario

A 20-year-old Arkansas man has been arrested following a coordinated federal and local investigation into alleged online threats made inside a multiplayer gaming chat, which authorities say referenced a hypothetical mass casualty scenario at a Walmart during a nationwide lockdown tied to a hantavirus outbreak.

The suspect, identified as Aaron Keith Bynum, was taken into custody in Marion County after investigators reviewed digital communications that were first flagged through an electronic tip submitted to federal authorities.

According to the FBI, the case began on May 9 when analysts at its National Threat Operations Center received a report involving statements allegedly made during an online gaming exchange.

Investigators say the initial tip included both a gaming username and a recorded clip of the in-game conversation, allowing federal analysts to begin tracing the account through platform data provided by the game’s operator. KTBS reported.

Rather than moving immediately toward enforcement action, officials first worked to confirm the origin of the communication and verify subscriber information tied to the account.

That process, according to law enforcement accounts, was central to identifying the individual behind the profile.

Once the account was linked to Bynum, the matter was escalated to FBI field agents in Arkansas, who coordinated with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators then gathered additional evidence and presented findings to a judge, resulting in court approval for both a search warrant and an arrest warrant.

Officials say the investigation remained focused on establishing a clear digital trail before any physical enforcement action was taken.

Authorities later executed a search at Bynum’s residence, where electronic devices including a computer were seized for forensic review.

He was arrested without incident and transported to the Marion County Detention Center for booking.

Officials confirmed he faces one count of first-degree terroristic threatening, a Class D felony, along with one count of harassing communications, a Class A misdemeanor.

His bond was set at $2,500.

The alleged threat referenced a hypothetical scenario involving a nationwide lockdown tied to a hantavirus outbreak, a rare rodent-borne virus that has drawn periodic public attention due to isolated but severe cases.

While infections in the United States remain uncommon, Inquisitr reported that hantavirus can cause hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a serious respiratory illness that may become life-threatening once symptoms progress to the lungs.

Health officials note that transmission typically occurs through exposure to infected rodents or contaminated environments such as cabins, barns, sheds, or storage areas where droppings or nesting materials are present.

Most strains do not spread between people, and even in the rare instances where limited human-to-human transmission has been documented—such as with the Andes virus—it has required prolonged close contact and has not resulted in sustained community spread, according to Fox News.

Initial symptoms can resemble a flu-like illness, including fever, fatigue, muscle aches, and headaches.

In more severe cases, the illness can escalate quickly into respiratory distress as fluid builds in the lungs, requiring emergency medical care. There is no specific antiviral treatment, and care is generally supportive, focused on stabilizing breathing and managing complications.

Public health agencies, including the CDC, have consistently classified hantavirus as rare in the United States, with most cases linked to rural or enclosed environments where rodent exposure is more likely.

Officials have also emphasized that while outbreaks can generate concern due to severity, the overall risk of widespread transmission remains low compared to common airborne respiratory viruses.

In this case, authorities have not identified any confirmed public health threat connected to the alleged online statements, and no Walmart location was specified beyond the reported digital exchange.

Law enforcement officials say no physical incident occurred and no injuries were reported.

The investigation remains ongoing as forensic analysis continues on the devices seized during the search.

Officials have not announced additional charges, and it remains unclear whether the case will remain solely at the state level or expand following review of digital evidence collected from the residence.
