Multiple reports reveal that former Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin has explored the possibility of running for president in 2024.
“I am seriously considering it,” Youngkin said, hinting at his interest in the nation’s highest office. This announcement from Youngkin further demonstrates a shifting dynamic within the GOP and underscores the influence of new figures in the conservative movement.
However, in a Wednesday interview with Maria Bartiromo and Fox Business, Youngkin appeared to minimize presidential aspirations, claiming he was “not paying attention” to filing deadlines to appear on state presidential ballots.
According to Ballotpedia, the earliest filing deadline to file for a presidential candidacy is scheduled for Oct. 16, 2023.
Youngkin told Bartiromo: “Maria, I’ve said over and again how humbling it is to even talk about my name in this context. But I am so focused on Virginia and elections this year to make sure that we deliver. We’ve got a giant agenda, and therefore I’m campaigning across Virginia for our House and Senate delegates and senators.
The former governor added: “I’m not in Iowa, I’m not in South Carolina and New Hampshire, we’re focusing on Virginia.”
Noting his desire to support efforts to establish Republican control in Virginia’s state Senate and House, Youngkin said:
“As I’ve said, there’s nothing more important than us holding our House and flipping our Senate in Virginia. That’s where my full attention is, and I am not paying attention to the filing deadlines, et cetera. I’m paying attention to making sure we hold our House and flip our Senate.”
David Drucker of Vanity Fair claims the GOP is “looking for a Trump alternative.”
