A group of House Republicans is asking the White House to turn over documents related to business affairs of the Biden family to determine if family members have profited off President Joe Biden’s position.
The story: GOP lawmakers on the House Oversight Committee have sent letters to the White House general counsel and National Archives and Records Administration, asking for documents that include information about the Biden family members’ foreign business ventures, Hunter Biden’s artwork, and any document where President Biden is mentioned in advertisements and investment opportunities.
The lawmakers want to review the documents “to ensure the Biden family does not profit off the presidency.”
“Reports regarding President Joseph R. Biden, Jr.’s family members attempting to profit from their proximity to the White House have been disturbing and recurring,” the letters, obtained by Fox News, read.
“Unfortunately, these reports of President Biden using his former official positions of public trust to swell the coffers of his family members are widespread, and any hope the pattern of family self-dealing would finally stop when he assumed the presidency has been dashed,” the lawmakers wrote.
Why? The Republican lawmakers pointed to reports that Hunter Biden’s artwork is expected to be shown at galleries in New York and Los Angeles and could be sold for as high as $500,000.
They’ve also cited reports that the president’s brother, Francis “Frank” Biden used his connections to Biden in an ad for a law firm where he works, as well as the recent announcement that Biden’s sister, Valerie Biden Owens, is slated to publish a book titled “Growing Up Biden: A Memoir” next year.
Worth noting: President Biden has sought to distance himself from Hunter Biden’s foreign business dealings.
Press secretary Jen Psaki has said that the Biden administration’s policy is “that the president’s name should not be used in connection with any commercial activities to suggest or in any way, in any way they could reasonably be understood to imply his endorsement or support.”
