A fiery confrontation erupted on Tuesday between Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN) and CNN anchor Pam Brown, as the congressman challenged the network’s coverage of Elon Musk’s involvement with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and criticized the media’s treatment of both Musk and President Donald Trump.
During the heated exchange, Burchett accused CNN of focusing too much on Musk and Trump, stating that the network’s ratings were “in the tank” because of its continuous attacks.
The heated interaction began when Brown asked Burchett about his concerns regarding DOGE and its handling of sensitive government data.
Burchett initially shifted the conversation to broader government issues, starting with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), a point he often criticizes. However, before he could elaborate, Brown interjected, trying to steer the conversation back on track and focus on the specifics of DOGE.
“Look, I’m not saying there’s no problems with government agencies or the IRS—” she said, but Burchett cut her off, frustrated by the interruption.
“Hold on! You asked me a question,” Burchett shot back.
“But you’re not answering it!” Brown exclaimed.
As tensions escalated, Burchett began to highlight what he saw as a double standard in how the media handled sensitive government information under the Biden administration. He pointed out that for years, multiple groups and individuals had accessed sensitive data without much scrutiny, but the moment Musk became involved, the media began criticizing his role in DOGE.
“Where were they fussing the last 3 or 4 years?” Burchett questioned. “I mean, we’ve had these different groups have had access, hundreds of different people have access to this that are nowhere in the scope of what needs to be.”
“And, yet, no one raised one peep about it. Now Elon Musk gets ahold of it and he’s going to make some changes that need to be made, and you all are pitching a fit!”
Burchett continued, calling out CNN specifically for focusing on the wrong issues.
“It’s the same old line, man. You attack the message carrier,” he added, suggesting that CNN was more interested in attacking Musk and Trump than addressing substantive concerns.
Brown, attempting to defend CNN’s coverage, responded, “OK, we’ve been covering at length where the money is going,” but Burchett swiftly interrupted her, intensifying the clash.
“No you haven’t! All y’all do is run down Elon Musk and Donald Trump, and you continuously do this, and that’s why your ratings are in the tank, ma’am,” he told Brown.
The CNN anchor, visibly rattled by Burchett’s sharp criticism, abruptly ended the interview.
“All right, we’re going to leave it there,” said Brown, cutting the congressman off.
The confrontation quickly gained traction across social media, with many X users reacting to the intensity of the moment.
“911, I need to report the m*rder of CNN,” wrote Florida’s Voice Assistant News Director Eric Daugherty.
Conservative Brief Editor-in-Chief Martin Walsh weighed in as well, writing, “GOP Rep. Burchett turns CNN host into a stuttering mess.”
