Many Democrats are condemning Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s decision to send three more busloads of illegal migrants to Washington, D.C. The buses arrived on Christmas Eve.
The more than 100 immigrants were dropped off as a cold front swept through the area. One bus offloaded passengers near the home of Vice President Kamala Harris. Reportedly, the temperature was 18 degrees when the late-night drop-off occurred.
Fox News reported that the Migrant Solidarity Mutual Aid Network assisted the immigrants and took them to a local church.
7News reporter Christian Flores noted that local authorities expected the buses to arrive on Sunday and were caught off guard by the late-night arrival.
The Associated Press noted that “young children” were among the passengers.
The White House referred to the bussing of immigrants as a “shameful stunt.” Spokesperson Abdullah Hasan said:
“Governor Abbott abandoned children on the side of the road in below-freezing temperatures on Christmas Eve without coordinating with any Federal or local authorities. This was a cruel, dangerous, and shameful stunt.”
Hasan added: “As we have repeatedly said, we are willing to work with anyone – Republican or Democrat alike – on real solutions, like the comprehensive immigration reform and border security measures President Biden sent to Congress on his first day in office, but these political games accomplish nothing and only put lives in danger.”
Anti-Abbott Congressman Joaquin Castro (D-TX) harshly criticized the decision to bus immigrants over the Christmas weekend:
“Worthless @GovAbott dropping off people with no money and no means on Christmas Eve in 15 degree weather near the VP’s residence.”
Congressman Ritchie Torres (D-NY) also condemned the transport of immigrants, writing:
“Governor Abbott claims to be a “pro-life Christian” yet shows no regard for the lives of children left shivering in the freezing cold on Christmas Eve. Dropping off migrants in 18 degree weather is so cruel that it ought to be criminal.”
Abbott’s office did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment, but did note that the White House was made aware of the incoming buses. On Tuesday, Abbot reportedly informed President Joe Biden that emergency housing facilities, even in larger cities in his state, were overrun with immigrants due to his open border policies.
According to Fox News, Abbot informed President Biden that Texas facilities were “at capacity” and that much of the state was recording “freezing temperatures.” He therefore determined that bussing migrants to a Sanctuary City was a better option than “releasing people outside onto the streets.”
Abbot reportedly told Biden that he was to blame for the border “catastrophe.” Abbot wrote:
“Your policies will leave many people in the bitter, dangerous cold as a polar vortex moves into Texas. Texas has borne a lopsided burden caused by your open border policies.”
Abbot added:
“This terrible crisis for border communities in Texas is a catastrophe of your own making. The need to address this crisis is not the job of border states like Texas. Instead, the U.S. Constitution dictates that it is your job, Mr. President, to defend the borders of our country, regulate our nation’s immigration, and manage those who seek refuge here.”
Fox News noted that “neither Vice President Harris nor President Biden have visited the border despite many calls from lawmakers to do so.”
On that topic, Abbot previously said:
“Our supposed Border Czar, Vice President Kamala Harris, has yet to even visit the border to see firsthand the impact of the open border policies she has helped implement, even going so far as to claim the border is ‘secure.'”
Abbot added: “Texas will continue sending migrants to sanctuary cities like Washington, D.C., until President Biden and Border Czar Harris step up and do their jobs to secure the border.”
