Harvard University is reportedly considering establishing a conservative scholarship center aimed at promoting “viewpoint diversity” on campus.
The move comes as the Ivy League institution faces criticism from the Trump administration over allegations of antisemitism and accusations of being too liberal.
Discussions about creating such a center, with an estimated cost ranging from $500 million to $1 billion, have been ongoing for several years.
However, the initiative may be accelerated following anti-Israel protests that occurred on campus in 2023, according to the Wall Street Journal.
A Harvard spokesperson told the newspaper that the proposed program would expose students to a wide range of perspectives.
The spokesperson emphasized that the center would not be partisan but would instead focus on evidence-based analysis, rigorous logic, and engaging with opposing views.
Efforts to develop the plan have reportedly intensified recently.
The university seeks to “promote and support viewpoint diversity” as part of this new initiative, per the New York Post.
Since President Donald Trump began his second term, Harvard has been at odds with the White House over accusations of widespread antisemitism on its campus.
These claims stemmed from anti-Israel demonstrations that many say created an unsafe environment for Jewish students.
A recent report from the Department of Health and Human Services highlighted incidents where Jewish students were spat on, harassed, and left feeling physically unsafe at Harvard.
In response, the Trump administration has declared that Harvard is violating civil rights laws. Officials have threatened to withhold approximately $3.3 billion in federal funding unless the university takes adequate steps to address campus antisemitism.
In a letter dated June 30, the administration warned that failure to implement sufficient changes would lead to the loss of all federal financial resources and would further damage Harvard’s relationship with the government.
Last month, President Trump issued a ban preventing international students from entering the United States to study at Harvard for six months. However, a federal judge temporarily blocked the ban.
Harvard has responded by suing the government over $2.2 billion in frozen federal grants. A hearing to resolve the dispute has been scheduled for August.
Harvard President Alan Garber has acknowledged the problem of a lack of conservative voices on campus. He also recognized that many students fear expressing “unpopular” opinions, calling these issues challenges that the university needs to confront.
The Trump administration maintains that Harvard’s campus is dominated by liberal ideology. They argue that the university’s environment limits diverse political viewpoints.
Despite pressure, Harvard has resisted conceding to the Trump administration’s demands. Sources familiar with internal discussions told the Journal that the university is determined to maintain control over its admissions, faculty hiring, and curriculum.
Officials from the Trump administration have indicated that simply establishing a new conservative institute would not serve as a bargaining chip in negotiations with Harvard.
While an initial proposal from Harvard was quickly rejected by the administration, reports suggest that talks between the two sides are ongoing.
Education Secretary Linda McMahon commented at a recent cabinet meeting that negotiations are progressing. She stated, “We’re negotiating hard, I think we’re getting close to having it happen, it’s not wrapped up as fast as I wanted it to, but we’re getting there.”
The creation of a conservative center at Harvard could represent a significant shift in the university’s approach to political diversity and its ongoing conflicts with the federal government.
