Lisa Marie Presley found fame and wealth in life, but reportedly, not happiness. Tragedy never seemed far from the Presley home. Elvis wrestled with an addiction to barbiturates that likely contributed to his unexpected heart attack and death at age 42. Lisa Marie’s son Benjamin suffered from drug and alcohol addiction precipitating his suicide in 2020.
Lisa Marie died on Jan. 12, reportedly from cardiac arrest — she was 54 years old.
Death was likely on Lisa Marie’s mind in the days leading up to her passing. Just four days before her death, Presley visited Graceland estate’s “Meditation Garden” where Elvis and Benjamin are buried.
Friend David Kessler accompanied Lisa Marie to Graceland and told People she was quiet and reflective as they stood by the graves.
Kessler reports that Lisa Marie showed him where “she’d be buried someday, right across from her father’s grave.”
Kessler reports trying to turn the conversation in a more positive direction, saying, “Not for a long time.”
Presley reportedly bounced back for a moment, saying, “Nope, I got a lot to do still.'”
Kessler reports that Presley “was very excited about what was coming up. She had such a challenging first and second act of life, and she was about to take on this third act that was so much about helping people.”
However, many noted that Lisa Marie looked “frail” in her recent appearance at the Golden Globes.
And it is clear that in her last Instagram post, Presley’s heart was heavy:
“Today is National Grief Awareness Day,” Presley wrote. “And since I have been living in the horrific reality of its unrelenting grips since my son’s death two years ago, I thought I would share a few things to be aware of in regard to grief for anyone who is interested. If not to help yourself but maybe to help another who is grieving.”
Lisa Marie added that “grief does not stop or go away in any sense. Grief is something you will have to carry with you for the rest of your life, in spite of what certain people or our culture wants us to believe. You do not ‘get over it,’ you do not ‘move on,’ period.”
Family members scheduled a public memorial service for Lisa Marie on Jan. 22. The service will be held on Graceland’s front lawn. The family noted in a statement that “in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Elvis Presley Charitable Foundation.”
The New York Post noted the famed property will now pass to Presley’s daughters, Riley Keough, 33, and twins Harper and Finley Lockwood, 14.
