In what many are calling an embarrassing disclosure, “classified documents” tied to Joe Biden’s service as vice president were found in the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement.
A source familiar with the matter told CNN that Biden’s personal attorneys found 10 classified documents while reviewing material kept in Biden’s private office in the Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement.
CNN reported the documents reportedly include U.S. intelligence memos and briefing notes on Iran, Ukraine and the United Kingdom.
According to Richard Sauber, special counsel to the president, White House officials notified the National Archives and the Archives notified the Department of Justice (DOJ) following the find. The DOJ subsequently initiated a review of the incident.
“The discovery of these documents was made by the president’s attorneys,” Sauber said. “The documents were not the subject of any previous request or inquiry by the Archives.”
Sauber added: “Since that discovery, the President’s personal attorneys have cooperated with the Archives and the Department of Justice in a process to ensure that any Obama-Biden Administration records are appropriately in the possession of the Archives.”
One of Biden’s attorneys discovered the classified documents when assisting with closing a private office Biden used at the Penn Biden Center.
Though the classified documents were found just days before the November midterm elections, party officials only disclosed the incident this Monday.
Sources told CNN that President Biden was unaware classified documents were in his private office and, reportedly, remains unaware of the content in the documents.
The Daily Wire reported the White House has “attempted to limit any possible fallout over the discovery” and is “downplaying” the importance of the documents — depicting them as not “particularly sensitive” and “not of high interest to the intelligence community.”
According to Sauber, the documents are currently at the National Archives. Sauber reported: “The documents were discovered when the President’s personal attorneys were packing files housed in a locked closet to prepare to vacate office space at the Penn Biden Center in Washington, D.C.”
Sauber added: “The President periodically used this space from mid-2017 until the start of the 2020 campaign. On the day of this discovery, November 2, 2022, the White House Counsel’s Office notified the National Archives. The Archives took possession of the materials the following morning.”
Previously, President Biden harshly criticized former President Trump for having classified documents in his secure office at Mar-a-Lago.
