U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika decided to dismiss two misdemeanor tax charges against Hunter Biden on Thursday evening.
This move followed a request by the newly appointed Special Counsel David Weiss. Weiss sought the dismissal of these charges, which had their origins in Hunter’s now-obsolete plea deal.
Late in July, a proposed plea deal concerning Hunter’s alleged tax crimes and other illicit activities crumbled. This occurred after Noreika sought clarity on the extent of immunity this deal would offer Hunter. The design of this deal was such that Hunter would plead guilty to the now-dismissed tax misdemeanors and acknowledge the facts surrounding a gun charge. This deal, if sanctioned, would likely have ensured that the president’s son avoided incarceration. Moreover, according to sources from Hunter’s camp, this deal would have acted as a shield against any future legal actions targeting Hunter, effectively serving as an implicit pardon.
Noreika temporarily shelved the plea deal, prompting Hunter to assert his innocence. Subsequently, the judge advised both the federal prosecutors and Hunter’s legal team to revisit and refine the plea deal’s specifics. A twist in the tale occurred the previous Friday when Attorney General Merrick Garland designated Weiss as special counsel.
By the following Tuesday, Weiss’ team made a declaration in court. The plea deal, along with its associated diversion program, was officially “now-withdrawn” and “never went into effect.” This implies that neither party is bound by its terms, as reported by CNN.
“None of its terms are binding on either party,” CNN reported. Hunter’s legal representatives concurred with Weiss’ proposal to dismiss the two tax misdemeanors. Noreika sanctioned this mutual request on Thursday.
Detractors of the special counsel suggest that this new case status fortifies the protective barrier around both Hunter and his father. This could potentially obstruct congressional testimonies from pivotal figures.
“Both Garland and Weiss were set to testify before Congress in the fall to address the whistleblower allegations, but now the stage is set for these so-called Justice officials to gravely shake their heads and intone, ‘I cannot comment on an active investigation,'” David Marcus, a columnist for Daily Wire+ Reader’s Pass, observed.
The House Oversight Committee, not to be outdone, has committed to tracing the financial dealings of the Biden family. Their objective is to discern if foreign entities targeted the Bidens, if President Biden’s integrity is compromised, and if national security is at risk. The committee also aims to collaborate with the House Committees on Judiciary and Ways and Means in order to unearth misconduct within the Justice Department and hold those who misuse law enforcement powers accountable.
“This move by Attorney General Garland is part of the Justice Department’s efforts to attempt a Biden family coverup in light of the House Oversight Committee’s mounting evidence of President Joe Biden’s role in his family’s schemes selling ‘the brand’ for millions of dollars to foreign nationals,” House Oversight Chairman James Comer stated.
