American Heritage High School football player Timothy Burroughs-Love, 17, suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed on the field during a game on August 18.
According to NBC Miami, he remains in the ICU.
Burroughs-Love is a stand-out athlete for his high school in Plantation, Florida. Local News 10 reported American Heritage was playing Booker T. Washington in a Friday night preseason game at Traz Powel Stadium on the Miami-Dade College campus when the incident occurred.
Since 2021, there has been a spike in the number of young people (young athletes in particular) experiencing cardiac issues.
Thankfully, Burroughs-Love is recovering. He posted an update on Monday evening.
According to the Daily Caller, Denisha Rolle, Burroughs-Love godmother, gave credit to the American Heritage medical staff for saving his life.
“They reacted quickly. So because of them, he’s still with us,” Rolle said.
American Heritage High has long basked in the pride of its sports legacy, with victories, triumphs, and accolades aplenty. This incident puts a spotlight on the frailty and preciousness of human life.
As has been the case for many of the young people with no preexisting medical conditions who have collapsed with cardiac problems in recent months, no medical explanation has been made available.
The FDA and CDC continue to advocate for vaccinations. In recent weeks the new director of the CDC emphasized that pregnant women should receive a COVID vaccination and boosters to guard against contracting COVID this fall.
Some are pressing for a more thorough review of the connection between COVID vaccinations and heart-related problems.
“We just want to give all honor and glory to God. Because he was able to survive, and now we’re taking it day-by-day,” Rolle added. “We’re more concerned about his life right now, than his ability or the thought that he’ll play again. We’ll see.”
