A legend, the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll, has died. Tina Turner’s death was announced on Wednesday on Instagram. She was 83 years old.
The Instagram post announcing her death read: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tina Turner.”
“With her music and her boundless passion for life, she enchanted millions of fans around the world and inspired the stars of tomorrow. Today we say goodbye to a dear friend who leaves us all her greatest work: her music. All our heartfelt compassion goes out to her family. Tina, we will miss you dearly.”
Turner suffered from a long illness and passed away at her Küsnacht, Switzerland, home.
Turner reportedly became a Swiss citizen in 2012, residing in a small town near Zurich.
Many have commended Turner’s talent and are mourning the loss of the icon.
Mick Jagger honored his “friend” on Twitter: “I’m so saddened by the passing of my wonderful friend Tina Turner. She was truly an enormously talented performer and singer.”
Diana Ross also posted I am “Shocked [and] Saddened.”
Basketball great “Magic” Johnson wrote: “Rest in peace to one of my favorite artists of all time, the legendary queen of rock n’ roll Tina Turner.”
Singer/dancer/songwriter Ciara wrote: “Heaven has gained an angel. Rest in Paradise Tina Turner. Thank you for the inspiration you gave us all.”
“Star Trek” actor George Takei wrote:
“A true legend has passed…[Turner]was our River Deep and our Mountain High, the Private Dancer in our hearts. She showed us that love really does has everything to do with it, and that we really did need another hero. And she was it. Rest now, Proud Mary. Raise your voice high in the heavens. You were always simply The Best.”
Reuters reported that Turner continued to draw audiences “years after her retirement.” The report noted the musical stage show “TINA: The Tina Turner Musical” was a hit in London and on Broadway.
Turner is survived by her second husband Irwin Bach and Ike Turner Jr. and Mike Turner, Ike’s two sons that she adopted.
