Orlando Bloom is opening up about filming an intimate threesome scene with real-life sisters Rooney and Kate Mara for director Werner Herzog’s new film “Bucking Fastard.”
Bloom, 49, discussed the scene while presenting the movie at the San Sebastián Film Festival in Spain alongside Herzog, describing the sequence as a sincere moment between the characters rather than one intended simply to shock audiences.
“There is such simplicity to the characters and their carnal desires, but also an innocence to the sisters,” Bloom said while discussing the film.
In “Bucking Fastard,” Bloom plays Gareth Mulroney, a sensitive man who becomes caught between twin sisters Joan and Jean Holbrooke. The sisters are portrayed by Rooney Mara, 41, and her real-life sister Kate Mara, 43.
The film is loosely based on the lives of identical British twins Freda and Greta Chaplin.
Bloom said Gareth quickly finds himself overwhelmed by the complicated dynamic involving the sisters.
“My character, the ‘Bucking Fastard,’ is sensitive too, and he’s quite quickly out of his depth in some ways,” Bloom said.
Despite the provocative nature of the scene, Bloom said the actors approached it seriously.
He described the threesome sequence as a “very sincere sort of moment” that he, Rooney and Kate developed together while filming.
Herzog said he deliberately avoided giving Bloom extensive instructions for the scene, believing the actors needed space to determine how the intimate moment should unfold naturally.
The filmmaker recalled telling Bloom that there were circumstances in which a director simply needed to step aside.
“You are in bed, and you have two women in your arms,” Herzog recalled telling the actor. “How you deal with it, I cannot give instructions.”
Herzog, 84, described the finished scene as “beautiful” and said it contained “such charm and depth.”
The comments offer new details about one of the movie’s more unusual sequences after “Bucking Fastard” premiered earlier this month at the Venice Film Festival.
Bloom, Rooney Mara and Kate Mara attended the Sept. 3 premiere together alongside Herzog, with the cast later continuing the film’s promotional run on the European festival circuit.
The project marks another unconventional entry in Herzog’s long filmmaking career, which has frequently focused on unusual personalities and relationships.
For Bloom, the role comes amid renewed attention surrounding both his film career and personal life.
The “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Lord of the Rings” star separated from longtime partner Katy Perry in 2025 after nearly a decade together. The former couple share daughter Daisy Dove, per Page Six.
Bloom was recently photographed vacationing with Daisy and an unidentified woman, though he did not publicly identify the woman or indicate the nature of their relationship.
He was also romantically linked earlier this year to Swiss model Luisa Laemmel after the pair were photographed leaving the Super Bowl together.
For now, Bloom’s comments have placed the focus back on “Bucking Fastard” and an intimate scene that could become one of the film’s most discussed moments — particularly because the two actresses appearing alongside him are sisters in real life.
