House Republicans, in a firm stance, are pressing Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for comprehensive information regarding the Venezuelan illegal immigrant, Jose Ibarra, accused of murdering nursing student Laken Riley.
The demand came through a letter dispatched to Mayorkas on Tuesday by Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) and Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement Chairman Tom McClintock (R-CA).
Jordan and McClintock explicitly outlined their requisites: the case history of Ibarra, details concerning all entries of Ibarra into the United States, specifics about Ibarra’s processing by CBP officials and confirmation of whether ICE initiated an immigration detainer against him.
They set a strict deadline of 5 p.m. on March 12 for the submission of these details.
“We are deeply saddened by this senseless and preventable act of violence, and we write today demanding answers about how Ibarra was allowed to enter and remain in the United States,” the letter, signed by every GOP member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said.
This move unfolds as the secretary braces for a potential Senate trial subsequent to his impeachment by the GOP-led House over the management of the border crisis.
The 26-year-old Ibarra has been apprehended and charged with Riley’s murder. Ibarra entered the U.S. in late 2022 and was released by authorities due to capacity constraints in detention facilities.
The victim, Riley, a 22-year-old student at Augusta University, met her tragic demise while on a routine morning run near the University of Georgia just last week.
The heinous incident has ignited widespread outrage at the federal government’s perceived inertia concerning the border crisis. It arrives on the heels of a disquieting revelation by U.S. Border Patrol officials, who disclosed that over 6,400 illegal immigrants with prior criminal convictions were apprehended in fiscal 2024, just a week prior.
