In a move seen by some as highly partisan, the House Committee investigating Jan. 6 has subpoenaed Trump inner-circle associates Kayleigh McEnany and Stephen Miller.
This follows Trump-appointed federal investigator John Durham’s recent unsealing of felony indictments against several high-profile Democrats.
McEnany served as White House Press Secretary at the time of the protest and breach of the Capitol. The Epoch Times refers to Miller as a “Senior Trump advisor,” and notes that earlier this year, he “launched a legal group to fight Democratic lawsuits.”
The report notes that McEnany and Miller’s subpoenas follow the issuance of subpoenas for Nicholas Luna (Personal Assistant to the President), Molly Michael (Special Assistant to the President), and Benjamin Williamson (Assistant to Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, Christopher Liddell, and the former White House Deputy Chief of Staff).
The Committee also issued subpoenas to Gen. Keith Kellogg, John McEntee, Cassidy Hutchinson, and Kenneth Klukowski.
According to the report, the Select Committee’s Chair, Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), said in a statement: “The Select Committee wants to learn every detail of what went on in the White House on January 6 and in the days beforehand.”
In an interview with Mississippi Today, Thompson said:
“We are going to be guided solely by the facts. The facts of what happened on January 6, in the run-up to that tragic day, and what has taken place since. That’s what we’re charged to do by House Resolution 503. There’s no place for politics or partisanship in this investigation. Our only charge is to follow the facts where they lead us.”
However, his objectivity was brought into question when he added:
“A violent mob was pointed toward the Capitol and told to win a ‘trial by combat.’ Some descended on this city with clear plans to disrupt our democracy. One rioter said that they weren’t there to commit violence, but that, and I’m quoting, ‘We were just there to overthrow the government.’”
“They marched on the Capitol with the clear intention of stopping the certification of the election,” Thompson continued. “And when they encountered the police sworn to keep us safe, they went on the attack. With bear repellent spray, knives, tasers, hockey sticks, even flag poles fashioned into clubs with the American flag still attached.”
“And those rioters breached the Capitol,” Thompson added. “They smashed windows, scaled walls, broke down doors, and invaded the halls of Congress. It was a scene of violence in the citadel of our democracy not seen since 1814, when British soldiers sacked the building.”
Judge Tanya S. Chutkan denied former President Trump’s request for an emergency motion to block the Committee from obtaining certain White House records.
Chutkan was appointed by President Obama and serves the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
