House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) Friday contrasted possible Impeachment proceedings during his tenure with the way his predecessor, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) began the process.
McCarthy explained in an interview with Breitbart news that a Republican impeachment in the House could only begin if enough members of Congress authorized it.
“To open an impeachment inquiry is a serious matter, and House Republicans would not take it lightly or use it for political purposes,” McCarthy said. “The American people deserve to be heard on this matter through their elected representatives.”
“That’s why, if we move forward with an impeachment inquiry, it would occur through a vote on the floor of the People’s House and not through a declaration by one person.”
That approach differs from how Pelosi began the 2019 impeachment proceeding against former President Donald Trump, according to a report from The Daily Wire.
Then-Speaker Pelosi decreed by proclamation that the House would conduct an impeachment inquiry into Trump. She permitted Congress to cast a pro forma vote on the matter weeks after the inquiry began.
For impeachment of President Joe Biden, a minimum of 218 members of Congress would need to vote in favor. Such a move would significantly broaden the range of investigative and legal resources available to lawmakers.
Recent findings by Republicans have brought to light more information regarding alleged misconduct linked to Biden and his son Hunter Biden.
Two primary instances of purported corruption involving the Bidens have been highlighted. The first pertains to allegations that then-Vice President Biden accepted a bribe from a Ukrainian energy executive.
The alleged bribe was in exchange for Biden using his official U.S. position to have the Ukrainian prosecutor investigating corruption by Burisma offiicals fired.
Another instance under scrutiny involves claims that U.S. officials and prosecutors hindered an investigation into Hunter Biden, thereby granting him special treatment.
