Comedian Bill Burr Defends Illegal Immigrants, Says They Don’t Increase Housing Costs

Comedian Bill Burr argued that illegal immigration is not responsible for America’s housing affordability crisis, describing his position as “basic math” during a wide-ranging interview with Rolling Stone.

Burr made the assertion while discussing political division, economic inequality and federal immigration enforcement. He said low-paid immigrants living in the country illegally should not be blamed for Americans’ difficulty buying homes.

“The reason why … people can’t afford a house is not because of some illegal immigrant,” Burr said. He instead attributed the crisis to wealth increasingly accumulating at the top.

Burr framed the country’s economic conflict as a contest between working people and a new generation of “robber barons,” rather than a conventional fight between Republicans and Democrats.

The comedian also warned that Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations could eventually be directed toward American citizens.

He recalled asking an audience who might be placed in enforcement vans next, prompting one person to shout, “Liberals.” Burr responded that liberals still represent roughly half the country and accused political leaders of encouraging Americans to view one another as enemies.

The interview came as Burr promotes “The Social Reckoning,” Aaron Sorkin’s follow-up to “The Social Network,” which is scheduled for release Oct. 9.

His housing claim, however, faces pushback from recent federal economic research examining the effects of unauthorized migration during the surge that occurred from early 2021 through early 2024.

A March 2026 working paper from economists Daniel J. Wilson and Xiaoqing Zhou found that unauthorized immigrant worker inflows increased local home prices and rents while producing little measurable expansion in short-term housing supply.

The researchers estimated that an inflow equal to 1 percent of a metropolitan area’s initial employment raised local home prices by approximately 2.2 percent and market rents by 1.4 percent.

For the median metropolitan area, the researchers calculated that those worker inflows accounted for 2.9 percent in home-price growth and 1.9 percent in rent growth between March 2021 and March 2024.

The estimated impact was larger across population-weighted metropolitan areas: 6.6 percent for home prices and 4.3 percent for rents. The authors said the inflows could explain approximately 30 percent of home-price increases and 20 percent of rent increases in those markets.

The paper remains a preliminary draft, and its findings do not represent the official positions of the Federal Reserve banks of Dallas or San Francisco or the Federal Reserve System.

The Congressional Budget Office reached a similar directional conclusion in a 2025 report, finding that the immigration surge increased housing demand, rental costs, property values and assessed values. CBO said new construction could eventually expand the housing supply, though that response takes time.

Other researchers have argued that immigration is not the primary explanation for nationwide affordability problems. Harvard’s Joint Center for Housing Studies noted that the sharpest pandemic-era increases in home prices and rents began before immigration accelerated in 2022, per Trending Politics.

The available research therefore identifies several forces behind the housing crisis, including years of limited construction. It also indicates that Burr’s broader assertion—that illegal immigration does not increase housing costs—overlooks measurable demand created when millions of additional people compete for a constrained supply of homes.
