Conservatives are facing an internal showdown as Senate Republicans prepare to debate a sweeping tax cut bill championed by President Donald Trump.
While many applaud the proposed legislation’s historic scope, others warn that its enormous cost threatens the nation’s fiscal stability, exposing a growing divide within the GOP.
Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson (R), known for his Tea Party roots and early support for Trump, voiced sharp concerns on CNN Sunday over the bill’s expanding price tag.
Johnson said he was troubled by the House’s endorsement of a version costing over $4 trillion — a significant increase from the $1.5 trillion figure originally cited.
“But from my point, this is a budget reconciliation process, so we ought to talk about numbers,” Johnson said during an interview with Jake Tapper, per Trending Politics. “The only number we ever heard about was $1.5 trillion, which sounds like a lot, but it’s only $150 billion per year.”
“And this is put in context that in 2019 we spent $4.4 trillion. This year we’ll spend over $7 trillion — $150 billion on that is basically a rounding error.”
Johnson, who campaigned on a promise to tackle the national debt, emphasized that reducing spending must take priority.
“We have to focus on spending, spending, spending,” he said.
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, passed by House Republicans last week under Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), aims to deliver the largest tax relief in American history.
However, its rapidly increasing projected cost has alarmed some fiscal conservatives concerned about long-term economic consequences, according to TP.
As the legislation moves to the Senate, Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) has signaled that the bill will likely be revised to strike a balance between enhancing tax cuts to satisfy moderates and promising spending reductions to appease budget hawks.
In response to growing criticism, Johnson took to social media, reaffirming his commitment to fiscal discipline.
“I pledged to do everything I can to stop mortgaging our children’s future,” he wrote. “I fully intend to make sure we are looking at the most relevant numbers in the Senate budget debate.”
Johnson’s public caution, however, has drawn pushback from fervent MAGA supporters online. Medical podcaster Jane Ruby labeled him “all hearings, no action,” accusing him and other Republicans of being “frauds.”
MAGA supporters highlighted his creation of the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) as evidence of his intent to rein in wasteful government spending.
“President Trump wouldn’t have started DOGE if he wasn’t concerned about the [national] debt,” one online commentator noted.
Other grassroots voices called for swift passage of the tax bill with Trump’s agenda intact, arguing spending cuts could come later.
“Pass the bill with Trump’s agenda. Cut the pork if you want. But pass the agenda with the tax cuts NOW,” one comment urged.
The Senate now faces the difficult task of navigating these internal divisions while weighing the bill’s impact on both the economy and party unity.
With billions at stake, the outcome could redefine fiscal policy priorities for years to come.
