An unexpected turn of events at the procession of senior royals to Westminster left observers shocked when it was revealed that Meghan Markle and Sophie, Countess of Wessex, were placed in the same car for the duration of the ride.
With the history between the two women and Markle’s history with the remainder of the royal family as a whole, many were left asking who thought this was a good idea?
The countess of Wessex joined her husband and other members of the royal family, such as Kate, Princess of Wales, Queen Consort Camilla and Princess Beatrice, during the ceremony at Westminster Hall to honor Queen Elizabeth II.
Elizabeth and Sophie reportedly had a very close bond, and the queen was a great source of comfort to Sophie over many years. She and the new queen consort were the only non-blood relatives at Balmoral after the monarch’s death. Sophie had previously been described as a “second daughter” to Elizabeth.
The queen and the countess of Wessex shared a passion for military history and learning and were often found researching documents in the Royal Archives at Windsor for hours on end.
Markle, however, never shared the same relationship with the late queen, due to a reported lack of time and effort to form a close bond.
While the queen reportedly welcomed Markle with open arms and broke multiple royal rules and expectations to make her feel welcome, the “Suits” actress often gave tell all interviews, in which she and her husband bashed the royal family and alleged that they were racist and abusive.
Sophie now has little time nor patience for the former actress, making light of the situation with Markle after the bombshell interview with Oprah.
When asked about the interview while speaking to a U.K. tabloid, Sophie simply asked “Oprah who?” showing how little the allegations would matter.
Now, however, Sophie barely even looked in Meghan’s direction, after a sideline swipe at the final public appearance of herself and her husband. One could easily see the deep hurt that Markle and Prince Harry had caused the queen in her final years.
No words were spoken during the evidently awkward ride, but Sophie seemed to have chosen to be placed in the same vehicle as Markle. A source told Fox News that Sophie “wanted to do this personally as I do believe in facing any problem head on.” Meghan was reportedly left “shaken” after the ride, and was quick to clutch her husband’s hand when they were reunited at Westminster.
