The House Select Jan. 6 Committee investigating the protest and breach of the Capitol has opted not to follow through on their threat to force former President Donald Trump to comply with their subpoena.
After almost two years, more than $10,000,000, an 800+ page report, and several hundred hours of testimony, the Jan. 6 Committee has concluded its investigation and, on Wednesday, formally withdrew their subpoena of Trump.
Chairman Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) noted that his committee no longer required testimony from the former president.
In a letter to Trump’s attorneys, Thompson stated: “In light of the imminent end of our investigation, the Select Committee can no longer pursue the specific information covered by the subpoena.”
Thompson added: “Therefore, through this letter, I hereby formally withdraw the subpoena issued to former President Trump, and notify you that he is no longer obligated to comply or produce records in response to said subpoena.”
Trump has shown contempt for the Democrat-led investigative team — often alleging the House select committee was “hyper-partisan” and referred to their work as a “kangaroo court” or “witch hunt.”
The committee subpoenaed the former president in October. Trump, fearing the committee would edit, misrepresent or leak to the media testimony taken out of context, responded to the subpoena by stating he would testify before the committee, but only if the hearing was televised live.
The committee chose not to meet Trump’s conditions.
Following the committee’s decision to withdraw their subpoena, Trump posted a message on his social media platform, Truth Social.
Trump’s post left no doubt about his low view of the committee’s work. He wrote:
“Was just advised that the Unselect Committee of political Thugs has withdrawn the Subpoena of me concerning the Jan. 6 Protest of the CROOKED 2020 Presidential Election.”
Trump added: They probably did so because they knew I did nothing wrong, or they were about to lose in Court. Perhaps the FBI’s involvement in RIGGING the Election played into their decision. In any event, the Subpoena is DEAD!”
Many of Trump’s supporters have reposted the former President’s Truth Social post across social media channels.
