Linda Shafran, publicist for Jerry Springer, reports that the notable talk show host has died. Springer was 79.
Shafran confirmed his passing to Fox News Digital on Thursday morning.
The popular “Jerry Springer Show” was launched in 1991 and ran for almost 20 years. The show peaked in the ratings in 1998, attracting more than 12 million viewers and bumping “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”
One of the original “shock jocks,” Springer would often feature the controversial. His guests were typically enemies, or apparent friends would come on stage and reveal incendiary, embarrassing or shocking information about their spouse, friend or co-worker during the live show.
Before entering the entertainment field, Springer served as the Mayor of Cincinnati (1977 to 1978). He also served as a Cincinnati news anchor in the 70s.
Gerald Norman “Jerry” Springer was born in Highgate, London, England. His parents were Jewish refugees from Poland; both of his grandmothers died in Nazi concentration camps.
Springer earned a bachelor of arts degree in political science from Tulane University and a J.D. degree from Northwestern.
