A book written by a former first lady has become the latest flashpoint tearing through a Democratic Party still struggling to make sense of its 2024 collapse — and one of her sharpest critics is a member of her own former team.
Jill Biden’s memoir, “View from the East Wing,” hit shelves amid immediate backlash from within Democratic circles, with former insiders lining up to question why she chose this moment to revisit one of the most painful chapters in recent party history.
Andrew Bates, who served as a senior deputy press secretary in the Biden White House, took his grievances public through the New York Post, arguing the book does the party no favors by dragging the 2024 presidential debate back into the spotlight.
That debate — held in June 2024 between then-President Joe Biden and Republican nominee Donald Trump — became a defining disaster for the Democratic ticket. Biden froze repeatedly, stumbled through answers, and left viewers across the political spectrum questioning whether he was fit to serve another term.
The performance broke open months of whispered concerns about the president’s cognitive health, forcing those conversations into the mainstream almost overnight.
Democratic leadership ultimately concluded the damage was irreparable. Biden was pushed off the ticket weeks later in a move that at least one journalist characterized as a political “coup,” with Vice President Kamala Harris elevated to lead the party into November — a campaign that also ended in defeat.
Bates made clear he has not made peace with how it all unraveled. “We had a duty to win and we didn’t,” he told the Post. “I think about that all the time. But I don’t see why that painful conversation for the party needed to be publicly reopened right now.”
Jill Biden had a direct message for him.
Speaking Wednesday evening at a book-promotion event inside the Sixth and I synagogue in Washington, D.C., the former first lady addressed Bates by name after moderator Paola Ramos raised his criticism from the stage, the U.K.’s Daily Mail reported.
“You know, I just want to say that my book has one chapter on the political wounds. One. One. The rest of the book contains my reflections of the four years at the White House,” she told the audience in remarks captured on video and posted to X.
She then issued a challenge that drew immediate applause from the crowd.
“So I want to say to Andrew, ‘call me up and say it to my face, buddy,'” the former first lady said. Ramos responded with a simple “wow.”
When the moderator pointed out that Bates had gone to the New York Post rather than pick up the phone, Jill Biden laughed off the observation while standing her ground.
“Oh, he went to the Post. OK,” she said. “I know, but if somebody has something to say to you, say it to my face!”
Ramos pushed back gently, suggesting the public challenge had left the former first lady exposed. Biden acknowledged the point without retreating. “OK, that’s fair, but his comment wasn’t fair,” she said.
The memoir’s most explosive content centers on what Jill Biden says she feared in real time during the debate — that her husband may have suffered a stroke. She also reportedly wrote that Biden himself knew immediately the night had gone wrong, something she confirmed for him directly.
Those admissions have stunned former staffers who publicly defended the president’s health in the aftermath of the debate, with the campaign attributing his performance at the time to a cold.
The Bidens proceeded to a post-debate afterparty and later stopped at an Atlanta-area Waffle House, where Biden, when pressed about the performance, pointed the finger at his opponent.
“It’s hard to debate a liar,” he said in video posted to X.
Former staffers interviewed by the Post were blunt about the stroke claim. “Why did we push out he had a cold if she thought he had a stroke?” one asked.
Another went further. “No one thought he had a stroke. That is in her head and her head only. This has been litigated and relitigated among staff. We didn’t think he had a health issue because they kept on with the schedule. Immediately to the afterparty and then to Waffle House. Who goes to Waffle House after a stroke?”
