The ex-husband of first lady Jill Biden has called her out for keeping President Joe Biden in the presidential race as his cognitive abilities weaken.
Jill Biden’s ex-husband criticized her for supporting the president even after his poor debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Although some Americans view the first lady’s steadfast support of her husband as admirable, not all of them share the same belief.
Bill Stevenson, who was married to Jill Biden from 1970-1975, discussed his ex-wife during an interview with the New York Post on Saturday.
“The Dr. Jill Biden who I’ve seen on TV in the last five years is not the same person I married or that I recognize in any way,” Stevenson said.
“She’s matriculated into a completely different woman,” he added.
Despite the president’s execrable debate performance, the first lady celebrated her husband’s efforts as prominent Democrats called for him to step aside as the party’s presumptive presidential nominee.
At a debate after-party, the first lady praised her husband, saying, “Joe, you did such a great job. You answered every question. You knew all the facts.”
Stevenson believes that Jill Biden’s support of her husband won’t be helpful toward his reelection campaign.
“I just don’t understand why she is so adamant about defending him and keeping him in the race since it appears that he’s struggling,” Stevenson said.
“It appears that he’s struggling with everybody these days,” he added.
“I’ve been proud of her at certain moments. I have no hard feelings. … I’m just surprised to see her front and center in the middle of this battle after flying under the radar for so many years,” he continued.
“She’s always been very driven. People say she’s the one who wants to be president now,” Stevenson said.
Interestingly, Stevenson is a Trump supporter. He has accused the incumbent president of lying periodically.
“It makes me cringe every time he calls Trump a liar because I’m telling you right now, there is no better liar than President Biden,” he said.
“He’s just a bad person. I’m probably one of the few people outside his family who has known him for 50 years,” Stevenson continued.
Fox News noted that Biden is facing increased public backlash over his lackluster debate performance, where he often misspoke and had lapses in his judgment.
In fact, the New York Times editorial board called on the president to depart the presidential race, saying, “Biden is not the man he was four years ago.”
“The president appeared on Thursday night as the shadow of a great public servant. He struggled to explain what he would accomplish in a second term. … [T]he greatest public service Mr. Biden can now perform is to announce that he will not continue to run for re-election,” the board wrote.
Despite calls to withdraw from the race, Biden will reportedly not end his presidential campaign.
During his first post-debate rally in North Carolina, the president, alongside his wife, told supporters he would not be running again if he didn’t believe he could win.
