Senator John Kennedy’s, R-La., Southern drawl and grandfatherly persona is disarming. But his opponents know well that the Oxford scholar’s wit can impart a stinging rebuke the public long remembers.
On Tuesday, the Senator, who graduated magna cum laude from Vanderbilt, earned a law degree from UVA then a degree from Oxford, delivered another memorable line — this time rebuking the Biden administration for record-high gas prices.
During an interview on Fox News’ “Jesse Watters Primetime,” Kennedy was discussing “soaring inflation” and the Biden administration’s “dismal response” to the economic woes that plague the country and said:
“I don’t know about where you live, Jesse, but in my state, the price of gas is so high that it would be cheaper to buy cocaine and just run everywhere.”
Townhall’s Spencer Brown quickly noted Kennedy’s remark:
As only he can, @SenJohnKennedy breaks down the Biden administration’s already bad week, explains that “the price of gas is so high that it would be cheaper to buy cocaine and just run everywhere.” Plus other reasons:
“President Biden is about as popular right now as a sinkhole.”
On Saturday, The Daily Wire reported that the average cost of a gallon of gasoline has more than doubled since President Joe Biden took office.
On Wednesday, The Daily Wire noted that a gallon of gas exceeds $5.00 per gallon in 16 states and Washington, D.C. CNET reports gas at a Chevron station in Mendocino, California — about 150 miles north of San Francisco — was $9.60 a gallon last Friday afternoon.
Attempting to inject humor into a discussion on America’s gloomy economic outlook, Kennedy told Watters:
“In Washington, D.C., when I feel inadequate, I just look around. On really bad days I see liars and frauds and meatheads in every direction.”
On a more serious note, Kennedy said, “This is what President Biden’s and Vice President Harris’ Washington, D.C. has given the American people.”
Mocking the administration’s poor decisions and mixed messaging, Kennedy lobbed a verbal bomb toward Biden’s Treasury Department:
“Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, who was also captain of ‘Team Transitory Inflation,’ announced that she’s really sorry but inflation’s not going to be transitory, it’s going to be with us for a long while.”
Kennedy continued. “In other words, she does not have a solution to inflation but she really admires the problem — in other words, get used to it.“
“Meanwhile her boss,” Kennedy added, “President Biden, continues to campaign for more economic chaos by trying to convince us in Congress to raise taxes by $3.5 trillion, by expanding an already generous welfare state, and by turning cops into social workers.”
Shifting back into a more comedic gear, Kennedy added, “If Biden isn’t responsible for inflation, then Jimmy Hoffa died of natural causes.”
The Senator is well-known for straight talk spiced with humor.
Referencing Governor Cuomo lecturing Americans on COVID protocols, Kennedy said, “It is like a frog calling you ugly.”
In January, The Daily Wire reported on Kennedy mocking President Joe Biden:
“The Biden administration has mismanaged COVID, it has mismanaged inflation, it has mismanaged the border, and it has mismanaged foreign policy, all in one year. If the aliens landed tomorrow and said, ‘take me to your leader,’ it would be embarrassing…”
During an interview with Sean Hannity, Kennedy poked fun at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, saying:
“Sean, with respect, there are times, particularly recently, when I think Speaker Pelosi is one of those people that tried Tide Pods.”
