Vice President Kamala Harris is under fire for copying former President Donald Trump’s campaign promise of not imposing taxes on tips for workers.
While speaking in Nevada on Saturday, Harris mentioned Culinary Union Local 226 at her rally and pledged that if she became president in November, she would eliminate taxes for workers and increase the minimum wage.
The vice president’s vow comes after Trump announced in June that if he is elected president, he would “not charge taxes on tips.”
“I know Culinary 226 is in the house,” Harris said in Nevada.
“And, the culinary union, as everyone in Nevada knows, they have helped lead the way in our country for workers’ rights and workers dignity. I have to say, for years I’ve been so proud to work by your side,” she added.
Harris then said that while serving as Attorney General of California, she worked hard to cease “wage theft.” The vice president said she continued her fight upon being elected to the U.S. Senate.
“When I was Attorney General of California, we worked together to crack down on wage theft. When I was a United States senator we fought together for paid family leave and medical leave, and earlier this year right here in Vegas we celebrated your historic contract win,” she said.
“And, it is my promise to everyone here, when I am President, we will continue our fight for working families of America. Including to raise the minimum wage, and eliminate taxes on tips for service and hospitality workers,” Harris continued.
The vice president said her administration would work to reduce consumer prices and “take on big corporations that engage in illegal price-gouging.” She said she would go after pharmaceutical companies to drive down prescription drug prices.
Harris recently became the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee and chose Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) as her running mate.
On X, Trump’s campaign reacted to Kamala’s remarks, saying she stole the former president’s promise but would not live up to her pledge.
In June, Trump spoke at a roundtable event in Michigan, where he outlined his plan to cease taxes on tips.
“Tell your waiters and waitresses, anybody else getting tips, cause they’re … a lot of people get tips,” Trump said. “Car attendants and caddies, and a lot of different people get tips. We are not going to tax tips — the tax immediately is coming off.”
The former president reacted to Harris’ remarks in Nevada, saying that her pledge to end taxes on tips was merely “political.”
“Kamala Harris, whose ‘Honeymoon’ period is ENDING, and is starting to get hammered in the Polls, just copied my NO TAXES ON TIPS policy,” the former president said on Truth Social.
“The difference is, she won’t do it, she just wants it for Political Purposes! This was a TRUMP idea — She has no ideas, she can only steal from me. Remember, Kamala has proposed the LARGEST TAX INCREASE IN HISTORY — It won’t happen. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!” he added.
