Former Vice President Kamala Harris drew criticism on social media Friday after a lengthy answer she gave about hope during an interview with former CNN host Don Lemon went viral online.
Harris made the remarks while appearing on Lemon’s podcast, where she discussed political setbacks, leadership and the possibility of a future presidential campaign.
During the conversation, Harris reflected on what she believes inspires people to remain optimistic during difficult times.
“I really, truly believe this,” Harris said. “We each have light inside of us. And we need to know that that is what inspires our hope as much as anything external to ourselves.”
The former vice president encouraged listeners not to allow political defeats or personal disappointments to diminish their sense of purpose.
“And when we feel that and and and not allow an election or an individual to dampen that light, and instead let that light kind of carry us in particular through moments of darkness,” Harris said.
She added that people should not only possess hope but also act upon it.
“It is so important that we not only have hope, but that we understand that that should be a verb,” Harris said.
A clip of the exchange quickly circulated on social media platforms, where critics mocked the answer and described it as overly complicated.
“Good word salad answer that can be summed up in two words: stay positive,” one X user wrote.
Another compared the answer to a student attempting to stretch a short essay into a longer assignment, per Fox News.
Several critics also pointed out that the word “hope” already functions as both a noun and a verb in standard English usage.
One social media user responded by writing, “It’s a noun: ‘I have hope that she never runs for any government office again.’ And it is a verb: ‘I hope she never runs for any government office again.’”
The reaction marked the latest instance in which Harris has faced criticism from opponents over her speaking style and public remarks.
The discussion came after Lemon asked Harris whether she intends to seek the presidency again in 2028.
Harris did not rule out a future campaign but said she has not yet made a decision.
“I have not decided, to be honest with you,” Harris said.
The former vice president said she has spent considerable time traveling the country and listening to voters since leaving office.
According to Harris, many Americans are looking for leaders willing to take risks rather than simply follow public opinion.
She also argued that voters want leaders who understand their concerns and prioritize the public’s needs.
“I think people want to know that they are being seen and heard,” Harris said.
