Surprising few, former news host and 2022 Arizona gubernatorial candidate formally announced her bid to run for a seat in the Senate in the 2024 election.
The likely three-way race will feature Kari Lake initially facing off against Republicans Blake Masters and Mark Lamb, Pinal County sheriff. The winner of that primary will face incumbent Kyrsten Sinema (Independent) and Democrat Ruben Gallego.
Kyrsten Sinema, the incumbent who left the Democratic Party to become an Independent in 2021, has not formally announced her intent to run in 2024.
Fox News reported the 2024 Arizona election will be “one of the most closely watched races of 2024.”
Former President Donald Trump has informally endorsed Lake.
Lake lost her gubernatorial bid in a close, hard-fought and disputed race. Following the loss she has remained in the spotlight — contesting her loss and seemingly maneuvering to secure an invite to serve as Trump’s vice president.
Evidently working to establish a national profile, Lake coordinated rallies in 14 states in the last three months. During these events, Lake often endorses local conservative Republican candidates and addresses national-level issues she believes Republicans are best able to address.
The resilient politician recently told a crowd in Scottsdale, Arizona: “I am not going to retreat. I’m going to stand on top of this hill with every single one of you. And I know you’re on my side as I formally announce my candidacy for the United States Senate.”
In announcing her candidacy, Lake said: I’m in this for us Arizonans, and when you elect me to the United States Senate, you are electing a mama bear on a mission to protect not just my kiddos, not just my babies. I want to protect Arizona, and I want to protect the United States of America. I promise I will make you proud.
Lake will face off with Lamb, the only other major candidate in the race for the GOP nomination, and the winner will likely face Phoenix-area Democrat Rep. Ruben Gallego, who is seen as the front-runner for his party’s nomination.
Lamb, who will prove a formidable opponent for Lake, claimed in a recent statement that he was “the only proven conservative winner.”
Lamb added: “I am a lifelong conservative who has dedicated my life to protecting Arizonans and keeping them safe when Democrat policies make that job almost impossible. I have been in Arizona fighting for the people that call this great state home. I’m not a talker, I’m a doer, and I win elections. That is what separates me from my opponents.”
Gallego swiped at Lake’s announcement by saying that voters would reject her “again,” a reference to her contested loss to current Gov. Katie Hobbs.
