Former Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake, an outspoken pro-Trumper and rising star in the GOP, fired a warning shot at potential presidential candidate Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. Mincing no words, Lake warned that if DeSantis “wants a political future” he should not enter the 2024 presidential race.
Lake lost her gubernatorial bid last November amid controversy and election fraud claims. She is currently contesting the results of the 2022 election.
The former news host is rumored to be on former President Donald Trump’s vice president shortlist and mulling a run for the Senate in 2024.
For his part, Trump continues to swipe at DeSantis though the governor has yet to announce a presidential bid.
Recently, Trump claimed on his Truth Social platform that no “true Trump support” would vote for DeSantis should he become the GOP presidential nominee.
Trump remains strong in polling but continues to be beset with legal issues — notably, there are open court cases in New York, Georgia and Florida.
Several insiders have disclosed that the governor will launch his presidential campaign later this month. Recent touring of battleground states and foreign trips to South Korea, the United Kingdom, Israel and South Korea seem to support the supposition.
Trump and Lake have tried to undermine DeSantis’ credentials and readiness to be president. Trump has claimed that he “made DeSantis” and that DeSantis would not be governor had he not endorsed him. Trump has also questioned the governor’s COVID policies and inferred DeSantis had an inappropriate relationship with a young woman.
During a recent podcast interview with Trump ally and attorney Rudy Giuliani, Lake suggested DeSantis would not have been reelected without his ties to Trump. Lake also warned that the governor would not win in a head-to-head against the former president and that DeSantis would ruin his relationship with Floridians if he stepped away from his responsibilities as governor to run for president.
“I think DeSantis’s political career is in trouble if he doesn’t get smart,” Lake said to Giuliani. “He has been an effective governor — there is no double about it. He has been effective. The people just voted him in.
“Can you imagine,” continued Lake, “if you were just voted in for your second term as mayor of New York and, within weeks, you were already plotting and planning your next [venture]?”
Lake added: “All I’m saying is I really believe DeSantis needs to realize that if he wants to have a political future he needs to wait until 2028. I think he could if he does the right thing and handles it. I think if DeSantis was to back out now, it would be really smart for him to do that.”
“He’s got a big career ahead of him,” Lake acknowledged. [But] “the question is, does he want a big political career? If he does, I think he backs out now and supports Trump wholeheartedly and then continues to run Florida.”
