Republican Kari Lake, who lost the 2022 Arizona gubernatorial election and contested the results, is now demanding that Arizona GOP Chairman Jeff DeWit resign.
The resignation demand follows the Tuesday release of audio that appears to show him offering Lake a bribe to suspend her campaign to represent Arizona as a U.S. senator.
The Daily Mail released the audio after Lake voiced accusations that “people were trying to pay her to stay out of the Senate race,” according to the Washington Examiner.
After the Daily Mail posted the audio and as Lake was campaigning for former President Donald Trump in New Hampshire, Lake told reporters Dewit should resign his position as Arizona’s GOP Chairman.
“I want corruption rooted out of government,” Lake said. “I don’t care if it is on the Republican side or the Democrat side.”
Pointing to Trump who was about to speak at the New Hampshire election watch night gathering, Lake added, “We are going to root out corruption, and that’s why the people want this man, who is about to take the stage.”
The leaked audio reportedly recorded DeWit asking Lake if there was an amount of money that could entice her to suspend her campaign.
Lake elaborated: “So, the ask I got today from back east was: ‘Is there any companies out there or something that could just put her on the payroll to keep her out?’”
RTM previously reported that Dewit asked Lake to stay out of politics for two years, citing pressure from “very powerful people.”
Dewit reportedly warned, “There are very powerful people who are gonna keep you out. But they’re willing to put their money where their mouth is in a big way.”
Lake responded by saying she could not be bought for “$10 million, $20 million, $30 [million] … no, no, no, [not even] a billion.” Lake added, “No. This is not about money. This is about our country. I think it’s disturbing that … anybody would even think this.”
Arizona’s three-way Senate race will likely feature Kari Lake (R), Rep. Ruben Gallego (D) and incumbent Kyrsten Sinema (I).
