The campaign manager and a counselor to former President Donald Trump considers him the “prohibitive favorite” to win the presidency.
Kellyane Conway predicted, during a Friday interview with CBS News correspondent Catherine Herridge, that Donald Trump will run for president. Conway responded to a question from Herridge about whether he would announce his candidacy before Thanksgiving.
“Well, he would like to,” Trump’s former campaign manager replied. Conway reminded the reporter she had explained in July her advice was for the 45th president to wait a few months.
“My advice to the president privately is my advice to him publicly, which is, ‘If you want to announce, wait until right after the midterms,'” she said earlier this year.
“I think once those midterms are done, President Trump can assess the timing of his announcement,” Conway continued. “I will tell you why he wants to run for president — Donald Trump wants his old job back.”
Herridge asked her if the raid on Mar-a-Lago changed anything for Trump.
“It’s changed the level of support that he has seen from people who may have been sitting on the fence, or reluctant, about another Trump run,” Conway responded. “They are really circling around him.”
The CBS correspondent asked again about the timing of Trump’s announcement of his candidacy, which prompted Conway to reply it would happen before the end of the year.
“He’s as active as anybody in these midterm elections. That’s important to the calculus also, Catherine, because we have the most ironic, if not unprecedented situation right now,” Conway said. “We have a president, a current president, whose party doesn’t really want him to campaign with them.”
Conway pooh-poohed concerns about Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) opposing Trump in 2024. When asked if the Trump camp was worried about a DeSantis 2024 run, she replied, “I don’t think so.” She added that DeSantis would probably be better served trying to be the best two-term governor Florida has ever seen.
“They’re friends, they’re allies. I think people want Ron DeSantis and Donald Trump to be two scorpions in a bottle.” She added, “They’re just not.”
