As expected, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has announced that Congress will launch a formal impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden.
This marks the first time in history that impeachment proceedings have been lodged against back-to-back presidents.
Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi brought impeachment proceedings against former President Donald Trump twice. Votes to impeach were passed in the Democratic-controlled House but were not ratified by the Republican-controlled Senate.
McCarthy has been under pressure to move to impeach, as multiple sources have alleged they have evidence Biden has been involved in illegal activity.
The revelation that there are more than 5,000 emails where Biden used aliases to obscure his identity — some of which allude to foreign business dealings and bank records showing how tens of millions from foreign sources were funneled through more than 20 bank accounts before coming to Biden family members — prompted McCarthy to pull the trigger on impeachment.
Pressure also came from Republicans who vowed not to vote on the upcoming budget bill unless McCarthy moved forward to impeach the president. McCarthy is adamant that there will not be a government shutdown due to an inability to resolve budgetary issues before the end of the month.
Most Republicans in the House believe Biden misled the American public about COVID-19; mismanaged America’s withdrawal from Afghanistan; was involved in illegal foreign business dealings with his son Hunter; and has instituted detrimental energy, economic, education and southern border policies.
Most Americans believe the Dept. of Justice has been weaponized and that Biden is “too old” to effectively serve a second term.
On Tuesday, McCarthy announced: “Today, I am directing our House committees to open a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe [Biden].”
McCarthy added: “This logical next step will give our committees the full power to gather all the facts and answers for the American public.”
Fox News reported the House Oversight Committee Chairman, Rep. James Comer (R-KY), will lead the inquiry. Comer will be supported by the House Oversight Committee Chairman, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH).
In his announcement, McCarthy noted the decision to initiate an impeachment inquiry is based on allegations of “abuse of power, obstruction, and corruption” that have come from multiple congressional committees that have been investigating the president for months.
An excerpt from McCarthy’s statement from the steps of the Capitol follows:
“Through our investigations, we have found that President Biden did lie to the American people about his own knowledge of his family’s foreign business dealings. Eyewitnesses have testified that the president joined on multiple phone calls and had multiple interactions, dinners resulted in cars and millions of dollars into his sons and his son’s business partners.
“We know that bank records show that nearly $20 million in payments were directed to the Biden family members and associates through various Shell companies. The Treasury Department alone has more than 150 transactions involving the Biden family.
“[We know of other] business associates that were flagged as suspicious activity by U.S. banks. Even a trusted FBI informant has alleged a bribe to the Biden family. Biden used his official office to coordinate with Hunter Biden’s business partners about Hunter’s role in Burisma, the Ukrainian energy company.
“Finally, despite these serious allegations, it appears that the president’s family has been offered special treatment by Biden’s own administration. Treatment that not otherwise would have received if they were not related to the president.
“These are allegations of abuse of power, obstruction, and corruption, and they want further investigation by the House of Representatives.”
The House GOP conference will meet on Thursday to formally move forward with their inquiry.
Fox News reported that Ian Sams, a White House spokesperson, railed against the inquiry — calling it “politically motivated” and sanctioned by McCarthy solely to “placate hardliners in the GOP conference.”
Sams said: “McCarthy is being told by [Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA)] to do impeachment, or else she’ll shut down the government. Opening impeachment despite zero evidence of wrongdoing by POTUS is simply red meat for the extreme right-wing, so they can keep baselessly attacking him.”
