North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has announced a significant escalation in his country’s military capabilities as part of his New Year’s resolution for 2024.
The dictator’s plan includes the development of more nuclear materials and the launch of three military satellites. This announcement was made during a meeting with the ruling Workers’ Party in Pyongyang, as reported by North Korean state media.
Kim Jong Un’s aggressive stance extends to the development of advanced attack drones. His remarks underscore a growing assertiveness in North Korea’s military posture. The North Korean leader criticized the United States for what he perceives as expansionist activities in Asia, specifically pointing to joint military exercises conducted by the U.S. and South Korea.
“North Korea’s ultimate goal is to have an ‘overwhelming war response capability,'” Kim said.
In addition to these developments, North Korea has been actively working to strengthen ties with regional allies, notably Russia and the People’s Republic of China. Kim Jong Un has engaged in communications with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin. In a rare move, Kim traveled out of the country by train to meet Putin face-to-face.
The Central Committee of the North Korean Workers’ Party convened in Pyongyang for a multiday plenary meeting to review policies for the upcoming year. Since 2020, Kim Jong Un has opted to deliver the annual New Year’s recap speech at Workers’ Party meetings instead of the traditional New Year’s Day address to the nation.
Throughout 2023, North Korea has increased its military activities, launching ballistic missiles into the sea near Japan and issuing threats of retaliation against U.S. military exercises. This escalation in military aggression and the development of new capabilities mark a significant shift in North Korea’s strategic approach, posing challenges for regional stability and international security.
