In contrast to President Joe Biden’s now-viral “No Comment” statement about Maui wildfire victims, made while vacationing at a beachfront home in Delaware, King Charles III of England expressed heartfelt sympathy in a letter to the president.
Writing on behalf of Queen Camilla and the United Kingdom, King Charles extended his “deepest possible sympathies” to all caught in the wake of the horrific Maui fires.
King Charles III wrote: “My wife and I were utterly horrified to hear of the catastrophic wildfires currently burning in Maui, Hawaii. We can only begin to imagine the scale of the devastation engulfing the island, and the heartrending anguish of those whose livelihoods have been so disastrously affected.”
The King added: “However inadequate it may be, we both wanted to send our deepest possible sympathy to the families of those who have so tragically lost their lives, and our prayers remain with all those whose loved ones are missing and whose homes have been destroyed.”
The message from the British monarch comes at a time when the magnitude of the Maui wildfires is being acknowledged globally with their impact being termed unprecedented.
Former President Donald Trump also extended his condolences to all impacted by the fires, emphasizing the unparalleled scale of the disaster in Maui:
“I would like to express my sympathy and warmest regards to the people of Hawaii, and specifically all of those who have been so gravely and irreparably hurt by the tragedy of the wildfires in Maui, something the likes of which have seldom been seen anywhere at any time.”
Many have praised Trump’s and King Charles’ comments. Vanity Fair reported that Biden has been criticized for his lack of empathy, and entertainers Stevie Nicks and Paris Hilton have been ridiculed for complaining that the Maui fires interrupted their vacation plans.
Fox News reported the death toll now nearly 100 with that number expected to climb dramatically as disaster relief personnel sift through the destruction.
King Charles concluded: “As the recovery effort continues, my special thoughts are with the extraordinarily brave emergency responders and Maui residents who are providing their support and assistance.”
