Earlier this year, the royal family issued a surprising announcement, that the children of the estranged Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Archie and Lilibet, would be given the royal titles of prince and princess, making them both eligible for the throne.
Now, an expert on the royal family has spoken out, saying that King Charles’ decision, even if well-intentioned, was the completely wrong move.
In a recent interview, Tom Bower, the author of “Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the War Between the Windsors,” told the Express that Charles made a “terrible mistake” by giving the royal lifeline to his grandchildren in California, Archie, 4, and Lilibet, 2, who are now sixth and seventh in line to the British throne, in spite of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s vocal exits from the family in 2020.
Bower argued that the move could end up embarrassing or even damaging the sovereignty.
“Harry and Meghan have undermined the monarchy,” Bower said. “[Charles] should have cut them off straight away. He should never have allowed their children to be made a prince and princess.”
Since the 39-year-old prince, and the 42-year-old former actress, moved to the Golden State, a rift has formed between the pair and the rest of the royal family. Tensions have raised even further since Harry released his bombshell 400-page memoir “Spare” earlier this year.
Bower added his belief that Harry “shouldn’t have been invited” to Charles’ coronation this May. Harry attended the crowning service without Markle, and departed immediately following the event.
However, despite the issues, the 74-year-old Charles is reportedly seeking to end the feud with his youngest son, with a palace insider reporting that he hopes to reconcile with Harry for “strategic” reasons.
The staff member told The Daily Beast: “Ultimately Charles has not just a personal but also a strategic need to resolve the issue. It’s not sustainable for the king, who is the national symbol of unity, to be on such bad terms with his son.”
Additionally, Queen Camilla is reported to be an important figure in bridging the fractured relationship between the two.
“The division between state and family is sacrosanct so Camilla will be pivotal in all this. She is the only one who will be in a position to advise him who he will listen to,” the source claimed.
Harry famously labeled Camilla, 75, as his “wicked stepmother” in the book, calling her a “villain.” Camilla married Charles following his separation from the mother of Harry and Prince William, Diana, who died in a car accident some years later.
