Norway’s King Harald V, Europe’s oldest reigning monarch and the Scandinavian nation’s head of state for more than three decades, has died at the age of 89.
The Royal House of Norway announced that Harald died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital Rikshospitalet at 6:35 a.m. Friday. His death concludes a 35-year reign that began when he ascended to the throne in 1991.
Harald’s son immediately succeeded him as King Haakon VIII. Harald is also survived by Queen Sonja, his wife of 57 years, their two children and five grandchildren, while granddaughter Ingrid Alexandra is now first in the line of succession.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre announced that the country was mourning its longtime monarch, saying the Norwegian people were left with profound gratitude for Harald’s decades of service.
Norway entered a national mourning period following the announcement, with crowds gathering outside the Royal Palace in Oslo to pay tribute.
Condolences also arrived from monarchs and political leaders throughout Europe.
Britain’s King Charles remembered Harald as a friend whose “kindness, compassion and deep sense of duty” stretched across decades. Denmark’s King Frederik and Queen Mary similarly paid tribute, remembering Harald for his personality and “big heart.”
The king’s health had worsened in the days preceding his death. Harald had been hospitalized with complications related to a blood disorder before later developing an infection.
Despite experiencing numerous health problems in recent years, Harald repeatedly rejected suggestions that he could abdicate.
Following Queen Margrethe II of Denmark’s abdication in 2024, Harald reiterated his belief that becoming monarch represented a lifelong commitment.
“I have taken an oath,” Harald said at the time, adding that “it lasts for life.”
Born Feb. 21, 1937, Harald was the youngest of three children and the only son of Crown Prince Olav and Crown Princess Märtha. His early childhood was dramatically disrupted by World War II.
After Nazi Germany invaded Norway in 1940, the royal family fled. Three-year-old Harald eventually traveled with his mother and sisters to Washington, D.C., while his father and grandfather, King Haakon VII, remained in London.
Harald returned home following Germany’s surrender in 1945. He later attended public school, underwent military training and studied social science, history and economics at the University of Oxford.
Beyond his royal responsibilities, Harald became an accomplished sailor who represented Norway in three Summer Olympic Games.
He carried Norway’s flag during the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and subsequently competed in sailing at the 1968 Mexico City and 1972 Munich Games. The Royal House said Harald participated in more than 1,000 sailing events and regattas during his lifetime.
Harald also challenged royal convention through his relationship with Sonja Haraldsen, a commoner whom he dated for nine years before receiving permission from his father, King Olav V, to marry.
The couple wed at Oslo Cathedral in August 1968 and later welcomed Princess Märtha Louise and Haakon.
Harald became king following his father’s death in January 1991 and adopted the same royal motto used by his father and grandfather: “We give our all for Norway.”
His reign combined efforts to modernize the monarchy with the preservation of its traditional ceremonial role. Harald and Sonja traveled extensively across Norway and developed a reputation for maintaining close ties with the public, per Trending Politics.
His final years brought repeated health setbacks, including heart procedures, knee surgery and hospitalizations. A 2024 illness during a private trip to Malaysia ultimately resulted in Harald receiving a pacemaker.
King Haakon VIII now inherits the monarchy following his father’s death, marking the beginning of a new chapter for Norway after Harald’s 35 years on the throne.
