On Sunday, a biological male who identified as a female entered Lakewood Church during a worship service and opened fire with a rifle.
The well-known Houston, Texas, megachurch is pastored by Joel Osteen.
Wearing a trench, the shooter, recently identified as Genesse Ivonne Moreno, entered the church with a young child.
Reporter Collin Rugg with Trending Politics posted: “JUST IN: The shooter at Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church has been identified as a transgender Bernie Sanders supporter.”
Houston Police Chief Troy Finner reported that Moreno was reportedly angry at Pastor Osteen and began firing her weapon shortly after entering the building.
Two off-duty police officers were in the congregation and responded immediately. One of the responders, is a Houston police officer, the second an agent with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission.
Moreno, who had an extensive criminal record, was killed by the off-duty responders.
The shooter used a rifle on which was written, “Free Palestine.”
According to the New York Post:
Law enforcement sources previously told ABC that Moreno’s gun said “Free Palestine,” however, officials clarified Monday that there was a sticker on the rifle’s butt plate that read “Palestine.”
Finner reported that in the course of the incident, a seven-year-old child was shot and remains in critical condition. A 57-year-old congregant was shot in the leg.
“I want to commend those officers,” said Finner. “[Moreno] had a long gun and it could have been a lot worse. But they stepped up and they did their job, and I want to thank them for that.”
CNN reported that an investigation is underway and that both law enforcement officers “have been placed on administrative leave while the probe is ongoing.”
Following the incident, Osteen posted: “Our community is devastated by today’s events and grateful for the swift actions of law enforcement. May the healing hands of God touch the lives of everyone involved and provide comfort during this difficult time.”
CNN reported that Osteen told reporters the shooting took place “in between services,” adding, “I can only imagine if it would have happened during the 11 o’clock service.”
