On Tuesday, former Democratic presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard announced that she was leaving the Democratic Party.
The former Hawaii congresswoman made the announcement by posting clips of her new YouTube show, “The Tulsi Gabbard Show,” to Twitter, in which she explained that she could no longer stay in a party run by “an elitist cabal of warmongers” that was driven by “cowardly wokeness” and “anti-white racism,” among other chief reasons.
“I can no longer remain in today’s Democratic Party that is now under the complete control of an elitist cabal of warmongers driven by cowardly wokeness, who divide us by racializing every issue & stoke anti-white racism, actively work to undermine our God-given freedoms” the first tweet began.
She accused Democrats of being “hostile” to “people of faith & spirituality” and “law-abiding Americans” with their positions on immigration and crime.
Gabbard called on other “common sense, independent minded” Democrats to join her in leaving, but made no indication of joining another political party.
The news spurred a flurry of reactions on Twitter from journalists and media commentators. Liberal hosts and commentators for networks like MSNBC celebrated the move.
MSNBC host Katie Phang mocked, “Wait, you were a Democrat?? Sure could have fooled me.”
British blogger Louise Mensch replied to Phang, saying that Gabbard wasn’t “ever” a Democrat, and adding, “Dosvedanya Tulsi nobody will miss you.”
Senior BuzzFeed reporter David Mack tweeted a mock headline, “Noted Republican Tulsi Gabbard Has Left The Democratic Party.”
Ironically, the move earned bipartisan support when conservatives also welcomed the announcement.
Former “The View” host Meghan McCain tweeted, “Congratulations, there are so few free thinkers and independents left in this world and you are one of them. We are in your corner. Onward and upward!”
Managing editor of Hot Air Ed Morrissey tweeted, “Don’t hold back, @TulsiGabbard, tell us how you really feel. This may also be how a lot of disillusioned Dems feel right now, too,” before quoting Gabbard’s initial comments.
Senior counsel at the Internet Accountability Project, Will Chamberlain, also celebrated, writing, “Democrats got Bill Kristol and we are going to get Tulsi Gabbard … Winning.” Chamberlain later retweeted a meme reiterating the statement.
National Director of Priests for Life Fr. Frank Pavone tweeted, “Praying for Tulsi and that many more see the light as well.”
The moderate now-former Democrat has sparked condemnation from the left for speaking out against “woke” ideology within the party and for being a fierce critic of the Biden administration.
