The Onion, an American organization that publishes satirical articles about news and politics, is in hot water for a “disgusting” joke about the hero firefighter who was killed by Thomas Crooks.
Just after Vice President Harris attempted to rattle Donald Trump by referencing the size of his rallies and highlighting his ongoing legal battles during their debate on Tuesday night, the Onion made a post on X that “crossed a line.”
The provocative post started with “fact check,” followed by “Trump: “People don’t leave my rallies,” then “TRUE: They’re carried out in body bags.”
Libs of TikTok ripped the post by commenting, “Shame on you. This is evil,” while others took the opportunity to garner attention for the slain firefighter, Corey Comperatore.
“This is absolutely disgusting. The Onion is mocking Corey Comperatore, a firefighter who was kiIIed by a deranged lunatic at a Trump rally,” Libs of TikTok said in a follow up post.
Kyle Mann of the Babylon Bee posted, “See, the joke is a fireman got killed for supporting Trump. Get it?”
Robby Starbuck, who has made headlines in recent months for exposing American staples for going “woke” by implementing DEI policies into their company, shredded the Onion for its “absolutely disgusting” joke.
“Imagine the family members seeing this while still grieving a senseless murder driven by extremist political hatred against Republicans,” he wrote. “Pure evil.”
Ian Miles Cheong said, “The Onion has crossed a line by mocking Corey Comperatore, the heroic firefighter who lost his life while protecting his family at a Trump rally.”
“This isn’t just tasteless–it’s wrong.”
Countless other X accounts blasted the Onion too.
Resist the Mainstream previously reported that a last-minute seating change led to the tragic death of Comperatore, the 50-year-old firefighter who sacrificed his life to protect his family from a sniper’s bullets.
Comperatore had moved to the front row with his wife and two daughters just moments before the former president was scheduled to speak.
Scott Dockherty, a friend of the Comperatore family, revealed the tragic twist of fate.
“So talk about a freak, freak accident,” he said. “That he wasn’t even supposed to be sitting there and he ends up losing his life.”
Comperatore was swiftly regarded as a hero after it was revealed the father shielded his family from Crooks’ gunfire.
“He’s my hero,” Helen Comperatore previously told the New York Post.
“He just said ‘Get down!’ That was the last thing he said.”
These final words encapsulate the selfless act of a man who put his family’s safety above his own.
Many on social media have applauded Corey for his bravery.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, President Joe Biden attempted to offer his condolences to the family, but Helen declined to speak with him.
“I don’t talk to Biden,” she stated. “My husband was a devout Republican and he would not have wanted me to talk to him.”
