A recent poll indicates a substantial majority of respondents—62% of men and 68% of women—believe the U.S. is headed in the “wrong direction” under President Joe Biden.

Published by The New York Times and Siena College, this poll is regarded as the top overall poll out of several hundred, according to 538’s pollster ratings.

The poll released over the weekend presents significant challenges for Biden as he approaches the 2024 general election.

In terms of voting preferences, if the 2024 presidential election were held today, 48% of respondents stated they would vote for former President Donald Trump, while only 43% indicated they would vote for Biden.

Additionally, 48% expressed belief that Trump would win, compared to 39% who believed Biden would win.

Regarding the impact of policies, only 18% stated that Biden’s policies helped them personally, with 43% indicating his policies hurt them personally.

Conversely, 40% stated that Trump’s policies helped them personally, while only 25% reported his policies hurt them personally.

“Polling continues to be at odds with how Americans vote, and consistently overestimates Donald Trump while underestimating President Biden,” Biden Campaign Communications Director Michael Tyler claimed in response to the poll.

“Whether it’s in special elections or in the presidential primaries, actual voter behavior tells us a lot more than any poll does and it tells a very clear story: Joe Biden and Democrats continue to outperform while Donald Trump and the party he leads are weak, cash-strapped, and deeply divided,” he added. “Our campaign is ignoring the noise and running a strong campaign to win – just like we did in 2020.”

Some have speculated the possibility of Democrats replacing Biden as the party’s nominee ahead of the 2024 election.

A recent survey assessing potential successors to 81-year-old Joe Biden revealed that among Democrats, Michelle Obama emerged as the preferred choice, surpassing figures such as Gavin Newsom, Kamala Harris, and Hillary Clinton.

Obama receives considerable support, with 20% of Democrats considering her a preferable alternative to Biden. Nonetheless, the party’s preferences remain fragmented.
