Report: Conservatives Aren’t Happy as Markwayne Mullin Faces Turbulent Waters Over Soft ‘Immigration Reform’ Rhetoric

A Cabinet secretary is fighting for his political survival this week as criticism from within his own party reaches a boiling point.

Markwayne Mullin, who leads the Department of Homeland Security, finds himself at the center of a widening controversy that began with a single weekend appearance and has since drawn in voices from across the conservative movement — and, according to a new report, from inside the West Wing itself.

Politico broke the story Monday, revealing that discontent with Mullin has moved past outside critics and taken root among administration insiders.

One senior official, speaking to Politico on condition of anonymity, offered a scathing assessment.

“It takes a lot to unite this administration around a cohesive point of view,” the official said, before adding a blunter verdict: “Mullin deserves credit where credit is due. Everyone agrees he sucks donkey butt.”

Behind the friction, Politico reported, lies a suspicion shared by many in Trump’s orbit — that Mullin cares more about winning over Democratic opponents than executing the immigration crackdown Trump promised voters.

The spark for this weekend’s uproar came during the National Governors Association Summer Meeting in Oklahoma City on Saturday.

Speaking to a room of governors, Mullin drew a line between migrants pursuing legal pathways to citizenship and employment, and those simply living in the country without authorization.

Mullin’s specific comments on work visas set off alarm bells among immigration hawks.

“If we’re looking to grow our economy, we need more permanent solutions on [work visas], because this narrative that it steals American jobs is true in some industries – it’s not true for all industries,” he told the audience.

Sensing the backlash building in real time, Mullin took to X later that same day in an apparent bid for damage control.

“NO amnesty for illegal aliens. Ever,” he posted. “We are a nation of laws. If you are illegally present in the United States of America—you will be detained and deported. Period.”

For many of his critics, the follow-up statement changed nothing.

Among the loudest was Gregory Bovino, the former Border Patrol chief, who took issue with Mullin’s decision to highlight nearly 900,000 naturalizations completed over the past year.

In Bovino’s assessment, Mullin was using legal immigration success stories as cover while dodging the harder question of whether stalled deportation numbers could cost Republicans seats in the midterms.

Conservative writer Ned Ryun didn’t mince words either, posting a direct call to action: “Can we get a new DHS Secretary please before it’s too late?”

Talk radio personality Todd Starnes piled on with his own pointed rebuke, accusing Mullin of shifting his message depending on the audience.

“But that’s not what you told the governors today,” Starnes wrote. “Are you deporting all illegals or just the worst of the worst? If you don’t have the stomach for the job, resign.”

Elsewhere, journalist Megan Basham used her platform to question whether administration officials had lost touch entirely with the party’s grassroots.

“What I want to know is who did these guys speak to before they went to DC?” she asked. “How do they continually get the mood of their base so abominably wrong? No one wants this except the Chamber of Commerce, which suggests to me that that is the only people they’re listening to.”

Robby Starbuck, the filmmaker and conservative activist, framed Mullin’s remarks as a sign of weakness on border enforcement.

He suggested the president should look elsewhere for DHS leadership, specifically naming Stephen Miller as someone he’d rather see running the department.

Commentator Nick Sortor went further still, accusing Mullin of actively encouraging Haitian migrants without legal status — along with holders of Temporary Protected Status — to pursue permanent residency in the U.S.

His verdict was short and unsparing: “This guy is a JOKE.”

By Monday evening, the controversy showed no signs of cooling, with the added revelation of internal White House frustration raising the stakes considerably beyond a typical online backlash cycle.

Neither Mullin’s office nor the White House had issued a formal response to the mounting calls for his removal as of the latest reporting.

The dispute lands at a politically sensitive moment, with immigration enforcement standing as one of the defining issues for Republican voters heading into the midterm elections.
