A Duxbury, Massachusetts, family was reunited with its dog, which went missing for more than two weeks, according to a report from WCVB.
Stephanie Mansfield expressed immense relief and happiness Monday upon being reunited with her cherished soft-coated wheaten terrier Henry, the report noted.
Terriers are described as friendly, cheerful and profoundly loyal by the American Kennel Club, which may explain Mansfield’s deep bond with her dog that had been missing since August 19.
The AKC also notes that this breed can be “just stubborn enough to remind you he’s a terrier.”
Mansfield enlisted help from Missing Dogs Massachusetts, an organization that helps locate lost dogs, according to the report.
MDM helped by distributing fliers about the missing dog, one of which caught the attention of local resident Kevin Bownes.
Bownes remembered hearing a dog’s bark from behind his property. Upon investigating the source of the noise on Sunday evening, he discovered Henry, a dog many had feared was gone for good.
“Luckily for Henry the dog, he kept on barking,” said Bownes. “He was in an area of tall weeds, a swampy area, and he was surrounded by a canal.”
He added that while Henry was stuck in thick mud, he seemed to be in good health.
On Monday morning, with Bownes’ guidance, Mansfield located the spot where Henry was trapped, the report noted.
Both Bownes and Mansfield were overwhelmed with emotion upon finding the dog. Mansfield confessed she used to find Henry’s barking somewhat bothersome, but it played a pivotal role in his rescue.
“Henry, lost dog from Duxbury is safe!” MDM announced in a social media post.
“After more than 2 weeks with no sightings, barking was heard in a nearby neighborhood for the past 2 days. This morning a local homeowner, Kevin, was able to safely retrieve Henry from a wet boggy area.”
Bownes was particularly enthusiastic about assisting in the rescue, recalling how the same group had helped him find his own dog a few years prior.
“Kevin’s our hero,” Mansfield declared.
