Massie Demands Social Media Influencers Reveal Secret Payment Sources After Angering MAGA

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) launched a scathing attack on social media personalities Tuesday, demanding transparency about alleged hidden financial arrangements that may be influencing political discourse across multiple platforms.

The congressman took to social media platform X to call out what he described as “paid grifters” operating across various online platforms without proper disclosure of their funding sources.

Massie’s post Tuesday morning stated his position clearly and forcefully.

“If we’re going to have campaign disclosure laws at all, the paid grifters on X and other platforms should be required to disclose who’s paying them to influence elections,” he penned.

The Kentucky rep. has maintained a consistent stance against undisclosed influence operations throughout recent months, making this his latest salvo in an ongoing campaign that has drawn both support and criticism from various quarters.

His criticism extends far beyond general commentary, targeting specific high-profile figures in the conservative media landscape who command substantial online followings and wield considerable influence over political discussions.

Earlier this year, Massie drew significant attention when he appeared to single out popular social media creator “Catturd” in a January post questioning paid influence operations across social media platforms.

The congressman’s January post asked his followers directly: “Who are the most nenarded paid influencers on this platform?”

His provocative follow-up question seemed to reference additional conservative figures, asking: “Does anyone else compete with Cat poop and DC drainage for this title?”

The “DC drainage” reference appeared to target Rogan O’Handley, who operates the widely-followed “DC Draino” account on X, suggesting Massie’s concerns extend to multiple prominent conservative voices.

Massie’s confrontational approach sparked immediate pushback from “Catturd,” who reportedly threatened the congressman with a defamation lawsuit over the implications contained within his social media posts.

The congressman’s concerns about undisclosed payments gained significant context from recent federal investigations into foreign influence operations specifically targeting American political discourse through social media channels.

The Department of Justice revealed last year that a media company later identified as Tenet Media received nearly $10 million in funding from Russian individuals connected to state media operations.

The massive funding operation represented a sophisticated attempt to influence American political conversations through seemingly independent conservative commentators and content creators.

Several prominent conservative commentators and pundits worked with Tenet Media before the company ceased operations following the comprehensive DOJ indictment that exposed the foreign funding scheme.

Massie’s position on transparency extends well beyond social media platforms, as the Daily Caller reported is evidenced by his voting record on recent legislative measures and his willingness to break with party leadership when principles are at stake.

The congressman faced sharp criticism from some conservatives after voting against President Donald Trump’s comprehensive spending bill on May 22, being one of only two GOP representatives to oppose the measure.

He defended his controversial vote by arguing for immediate spending cuts rather than future promises, writing: “If we were serious, we’d be cutting spending now, instead of promises to cut spending years from now.”

Daily Caller noted that President Trump issued a memorandum in April directing the Department of Justice to investigate Democratic fundraising platform ActBlue over serious allegations of illegal foreign contributions flowing through the platform.

The presidential directive specifically addressed mounting concerns about “straw donors” and foreign money potentially flowing through online fundraising platforms to American political candidates and committees in violation of federal law.

A comprehensive fact sheet obtained by the Daily Caller outlined the memorandum’s scope, stating it “directs the Attorney General to investigate and take appropriate action concerning allegations regarding the use of online fundraising platforms to make ‘straw’ or ‘dummy’ contributions and to make foreign contributions to U.S. political candidates and committees, all of which break the law.”

If we’re going to have campaign disclosure laws at all, the paid grifters on X and other platforms should be required to disclose who’s paying them to influence elections.
