Various conspiracy theories have emerged in the wake of the devastating fires that ravaged Maui last week.
Though many have pointed to the dry summer, poor land management and hurricane-like winds as key factors in the devasting blaze, others are casting a wary eye toward space weapons and television personality Oprah Winfrey.
Oprah Winfrey, who owns approximately 2,000 acres of land on the island, has been involved in relief efforts — visiting shelters and promising financial support once key needs are identified.
However, skeptics such as Matt Wallace, have drawn attention to the fact that while Winfrey’s land was endangered, it remained unscathed. Wallace drew parallels to a 2017 incident in Montecito where a fire led Winfrey to evacuate, but her property was ultimately untouched.
The Daily Wire reported that Wallace said: “In the last few years she has gone from about 100 acres to over 1000 acres! Then All of A Sudden Out of Nowhere A Fire Comes And Destroys Many Homes Near Her But Her Land Remains Untouched! SOUND FAMILIAR?!?!?!”
Wallace suggested that Winfrey acquires land after fires and mudslides at low prices to increase her personal net worth.
Another theory gaining traction is that the fires were initiated by a directed energy weapon (DEW), colloquially known as a “space laser.”
The New York Post noted that “photos claiming to show space lasers raining destruction down on the Hawaiian city have gained millions of views across social media, while images of trees still standing amid the inferno’s aftermath have been cited as evidence that the fires were not natural.”
One individual commented on this, saying, “This was a direct energy weapon assault on the people. And I say that because my friend in Hawaii showed a laser beam coming out of the sky directly targeting the city.”
Ben Hansen, a TV host, expressed his disapproval of such conspiracy theories, remarking, “It’s a shame that some people feel the need to hoax or participate in what I call ‘fraudulent reattribution’ by linking old media to recent events (i.e. the Maui fires being caused by space lasers). It’s deceitful & distracting to the story of real families mourning their loss.”
The Maui wildfires have wreaked havoc on the historic city of Lahaina, resulting in the tragic loss of over 100 lives, a number that is feared to increase as many remain unaccounted for.
President Joe Biden, after initially refraining from commenting on the escalating death toll, assured that the federal government would provide all necessary assistance to Maui. He affirmed, “Every asset they need will be there for them,” adding, “And we’ll be there in Maui as long as it takes.”
Current expert assessments suggest that downed power lines likely ignited at least one of the fires, which subsequently spiraled out of control due to the strong winds.
