George Soros, along with two of his family members and a cadre of other influential donors, has significantly contributed to the ascent of New York Attorney General Letitia James, who has initiated a lawsuit against former President Trump, according to a review of financial filings by Fox News Digital.
James, a member of the Democratic Party, has accused Trump and his company of inflating asset values to mislead banks and other institutions. She has alleged that Trump, alongside his children and associates, engaged in “numerous acts of fraud and misrepresentation” in their financial statements.
New York City Judge Arthur Engoron, who is overseeing Trump’s civil fraud trial resulting from James’ lawsuit, has faced criticism from Trump. The former president has denounced the absence of a jury trial and has labeled Engoron a “Democrat” and an “operative.” Trump has also cast aspersions on James, calling her a “radical-left attorney general.”
James’ political endeavors have been bolstered by substantial donations from left-leaning benefactors, who have historically invested heavily in anti-Trump initiatives. Records indicate that financier George Soros has contributed at least $20,000 to James’ campaigns, with two $10,000 donations in 2021 and 2022. Soros’ Open Society Foundations have funded numerous organizations that have opposed Trump.
Jonathan Soros, George’s son, and Jennifer Allan Soros, Jonathan’s wife, have also financially supported James’ campaigns. Reid Hoffman, LinkedIn co-founder and a significant contributor to James, has donated $47,100 to her campaign in 2022. Hoffman has been implicated in controversial political tactics and has been a staunch opponent of Trump.
California physician Karla Jurvetson has provided James with at least $67,300 since 2019. Jurvetson, along with Soros and Hoffman, has been a major donor in the political arena, opposing Trump and supporting Biden. Other notable donors to James’ campaign include Spike Lee, Sheryl Sandberg, Eric Schmidt and Tom Steyer.
During the civil fraud trial, Trump and his representatives have repeatedly expressed discontent with James. A spokesperson for Trump has lamented the statutory denial of a jury trial under the consumer protection statute used to file the case.
Engoron, who has a history of exclusively supporting Democratic candidates, wields considerable influence over the outcome of Trump’s trial. He has the authority to decide the case’s verdict and any resulting penalties. James is seeking a $250 million penalty against Trump’s businesses for alleged fraudulent practices.
Engoron has previously expressed his belief that he could overrule jury decisions based on his emotions as revealed in a video circulating on social media. He has also ruled that Trump and the Trump Organization committed fraud in their business dealings, a decision stemming from James’ lawsuit.
