First Lady Melania Trump returned to the White House spotlight Thursday with a major announcement expanding her Fostering the Future initiative to 26 colleges and universities nationwide.
Trump opened the Rose Garden event with a lighthearted remark that drew laughter from the crowd.
“I heard you missed me. Here I am!” she said.
The first lady used the appearance to announce new scholarship opportunities aimed at helping young Americans transition out of the foster care system and pursue higher education.
Fox Corporation and IndyCar each announced $1 million contributions to establish scholarships at Indiana University and Purdue University, bringing the combined commitment to $2 million.
The additions expand the Fostering the Future scholarship network to 26 colleges and universities across the country.
Trump emphasized that helping young people build successful futures should remain a national priority.
“The greatest investment America can make is not in technology, infrastructure or capital markets. It’s our children,” she said.
The event also featured an IndyCar decorated in red, white and blue and carrying branding for Trump’s “BE BEST” and Fostering the Future initiatives.
Trump praised the vehicle during her remarks.
“Look at this incredible race car,” she said. “Gorgeous and powerful.”
The car was displayed just days before IndyCar drivers are scheduled to race through Washington, DC, as part of the Freedom 250 Grand Prix.
Several prominent drivers attended the event, including six-time IndyCar Series champion Scott Dixon, 2016 Indianapolis 500 winner Alexander Rossi, Graham Rahal and Scott McLaughlin.
IndyCar President Doug Boles said drivers are expected to exceed 180 mph while racing past landmarks including the US Capitol, Washington Monument and National Mall.
Despite the racing backdrop, Trump kept the focus on education and foster youth.
She also announced that a recipient of a Fostering the Future scholarship became the program’s first doctor this spring.
“He will change the lives of so many people,” Trump said.
She added that future graduates could go on to “build new companies, launch new industries and redefine what is possible for all Americans.”
The first lady has made support for children and young adults a central part of her public agenda.
Fostering the Future is designed specifically to provide educational opportunities and resources for young people aging out of foster care, a transition that can leave many without the financial or family support typically available to other students, per the Conservative Brief.
Trump argued that education can provide stability and long-term opportunity for those young adults.
“Education is the one asset that can never be taken away,” she said.
“It is the foundation upon which confidence is built, opportunities created and the future is invented.”
Trump’s appearance also attracted attention because she has maintained a relatively limited public schedule compared with other first ladies.
She appeared before a backdrop of American flags wearing a sky-blue Michael Kors shirt, red Dior skirt and red Manolo Blahnik shoes.
The event combined the upcoming Washington IndyCar race with the first lady’s broader effort to expand opportunities for foster youth.
With two additional universities joining the scholarship network and $2 million in new commitments announced, Trump used the appearance to mark another expansion of one of her signature initiatives.
