Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) announced on Friday that she had introduced articles of impeachment against U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland after he admitted that he personally authorized the raid on Mar-a-Lago.
Greene’s resolution claims that the attorney general’s “personal approval to seek a search warrant for the raid on the home of the 45th president of the United States, Donald J. Trump, constitutes a blatant attempt to persecute a political opponent.”
The warrant, which was approved by a federal judge, was unsealed on Friday after the Justice Department and Trump’s attorneys agreed. It alleged that the FBI secured classified materials that were taken to Mar-a-Lago, a claim that has been contested by the former president who said the documents had been declassified. It also suggested the former president is being investigated for possible violations of the Espionage Act.
Republicans, including Greene, have repeatedly accused the DOJ of going after Trump for political reasons.
Noting his concern that the Biden administration has weaponized the Justice Department for political reasons, former Vice President Mike Pence tweeted:
“I share the deep concern of millions of Americans over the unprecedented search of the personal residence of President Trump. No former President of the United States has ever been subject to a raid of their personal residence in American history.”
Pence, who has been on the outs with the former president, continued in follow-up tweets:
“After years where FBI agents were found to be acting on political motivation during our administration, the appearance of continued partisanship by the Justice Department must be addressed.
“Yesterday’s action undermines public confidence in our system of justice and Attorney General Garland must give a full accounting to the American people as to why this action was taken and he must do so immediately.”
Greene’s resolution claims that Garland’s “effort to unseal the search warrant for the home of former President Donald J. Trump constitutes an attempt to intimidate, harass, and potentially disqualify a political challenger to President Joseph R. Biden, Jr.”
The White House claims that they were unaware of the raid prior to it’s occurrence; however, many experts have argued that White House officials would likely have been briefed.
Articles of impeachment against Garland are unlikely to pass in Congress with a Democratic majority currently in power and an unknown number of Republicans who would support the resolution.
