A podcast conversation meant to explore the emotional toll of children leaving home instead became a platform for Michelle Obama to reject that narrative entirely.
The former first lady’s remarks came during a taping of “IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson,” her podcast co-hosted with her brother.
Jon Stewart, the former “Daily Show” anchor, joined the recording as a guest. The discussion centered on the transition parents face once adult children move out and establish independent lives.
That transition applies directly to Obama’s own household.
Her daughters, Malia, 28, and Sasha, 25, had continued living with her for a stretch of time following their father’s presidency before eventually moving out.
Stewart approached the topic from a familiar angle, framing the departure of children as a loss layered with a kind of quiet gain.
He noted the return of uninterrupted time with a spouse, yet admitted a void remained. He said he missed “the energy and excitement of the kids being around.”
Obama did not share that sentiment. Her answer came fast and firm. “I don’t miss em’,” she said.
Rather than let the statement stand alone, she moved quickly to temper it. “I don’t. I love them. I’m going to see them tonight for dinner. I love them.”
To illustrate how differently she processed her daughters’ departure compared to her husband, Obama recalled the day Malia and Sasha first left for college.
Her account painted two starkly different emotional responses within the same household. “Barack cried when they went to college and I was like, ‘Bye, goodbye.'”
Beyond the emotional contrast, Obama pointed to tangible lifestyle changes she has welcomed since her daughters became independent.
Chief among them was newfound peace on weekend nights once defined by parental worry.
“Now, Friday nights aren’t wrecked with terror and fear about, ‘Where are you, where are you?'” she said.
Stewart returned to his own experience of parenting, describing how the responsibility itself had structured his daily life. He told Obama the role gave him “meaning and a pattern.”
Obama’s response signaled she saw no shortage of purpose in her post-parenting routine.
She shook her head and motioned around the studio where the podcast was being recorded. “I’m good,” she said. “Look at all this meaning I have.”
She expanded on that point, describing satisfaction with the schedule she now controls entirely on her own terms.
“I have a wonderful pattern. I love my schedule; I have a great schedule and it’s all mine.”
The conversation later shifted toward a broader theory Obama offered about gendered differences in parental attachment.
She suggested fathers may struggle more with an empty nest due to reduced time spent with children during specific hours of the day.
“I think fathers can be that way because you weren’t there from 6:00 to 9:00 at night, you missed a lot of it,” she said.
The remarks stand out as an unusually candid public statement from Obama regarding her personal adjustment since her daughters left the family home.
Malia and Sasha, for their part, have kept largely private lives since their father left office.
The sisters shared a Los Angeles apartment together during their time living independently. Joint public appearances involving both daughters and their parents have grown increasingly rare in recent years.
One such rare appearance took place in June 2026, when Malia and Sasha joined their parents at the opening ceremony for the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago.
Obama maintains that despite the distance, she remains closely connected to both daughters, seeing them on a regular basis — including the dinner plans she referenced during the taping itself.
