Michigan AG Makes Startling Statements on Drag Queens, Later Claims She Was Just Joking: ‘A Drag Queen for Every School’

On Wednesday, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel made controversial comments about the increasingly common phenomenon of drag queens in schools, later claiming that her comments were made in jest.

Nessel was the first openly gay person elected to a statewide office in Michigan when she became AG in 2018. At a civil rights conference in Lansing this past week, she decided to take a moment to discuss drag queens, according to Detroit News’ Craig Mauger.

“Drag queens make everything better. Drag queens are fun. A drag queen for every school,” Mauger alleged she said at the conference in a tweet.

"Drag queens make everything better. Drag queens are fun," Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel says at a civil rights conference in Lansing while speaking out against what she describes as efforts to divide people.

"A drag queen for every school," she adds.

Later in the day, Michigan GOP gubernatorial candidate Tudor Dixon tweeted out a response to Nessel’s comments:

“Attorney General Dana Nessel ‘proudly’ announced she is coming for our kids,” Dixon accused. “When I am governor, schools will answer to local parents, not progressive activists, drag queens, and trans-supremacists. The days of radical activist politicians sexualizing our kids are over.”

Nessel then responded, claiming that her comments were intended as a joke and criticizing former Trump Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos as “a greater threat to school children in Michigan than drag queens have ever been.”

This is the most humorless take imaginable on a comment made in jest. I expect more from the star of Buddy BeBop vs the Living Dead.

Your benefactor, Betsy DeVos, has been a greater threat to school children in Michigan than drag queens have ever been. https://t.co/mdkDHxN7XU

However, many of Nessel’s political opponents have taken her words to heart. Matthew DePerno, a Republican running to unseat Nessel, said, “Dana Nessel continues to show just how out of touch she is with Michiganders. Our students suffered through some of the most extreme measures put in place backed by Dana Nessel that kept them away from the classroom and her answer is to over-sexualize elementary schools.”

Nessel’s comments come at a time when parents and politicians alike grapple with an increase in schoolchildren being taught radical gender theory in the classroom. Many parents have expressed anger as videos of children being exposed to drag queens, or participating in school sponsored drag events, are surfacing on the internet.

“I don’t co-parent with the government,” said Garrett Soldano, another Michigan Gubernatorial candidate. “My pronouns: conservative, patriot. The woke groomer mafia wants to indoctrinate and subjugate our kids to their woke fantasies. It’s time to fight back.”
