A Warren, Michigan, police officer stopped a Camaro speeding through rush hour traffic Tuesday but instead of writing a ticket, he saved a baby’s life, according to a report from USA Today.
Officer Brendan Fraser stopped the vehicle he noticed driving at a reckless speed on crowded city streets. The driver reached speeds greater than 75 mph on streets where the posted speed limit is 45 mph, the report noted.
When Fraser approached the Camaro, he found a terrified mother in the passenger seat with a child in her lap.
The driver’s brother was cradling her 18-month-old baby, according to the report.
“We’ve got a baby in here dying,” the woman yelled at Fraser, according to a report from Fox 2 Detroit. Her brother was begging, “Can we please go?”
Video footage from the officer’s bodycam shows him pulling an unresponsive baby out of the car by his arms while his mother yells, “please don’t take him.”
The toddler’s lips are blue from lack of oxygen and he reportedly had only a slight pulse as Fraser placed the baby on his arm and administered several back blows.
The child may have been choking because he regurgitated on the officer’s arm and appeared to resume breathing.
“He’s breathing,” Fraser tells the car’s occupants, “look at him, he’s okay,”
“Getting them to calm down is just as important as trying to get to the baby,” Fraser explained.
Fraser advises other families with similar emergencies to call 911 first, instead of trying to transport loved ones to the hospital. He suggested rushing to reach a hospital could end in disaster. This story had a happy ending.
Officers transported the child the remaining one-half mile to a hospital where he was treated and reported in good condition, according to Fox 2.
